Jamie Lee Curtis Joins The Craft Cast for a Virtual Halloween Event

Blumhouse Productions, the production house behind this week’s The Craft: Legacy, has announced the debut of a virtual event it’s calling “BlumFest.” Premiering at 10 AM PST on Thursday, October 29th, via Blumhouse’s Facebook page and YouTube channel, Blumfest will include exclusive interviews, surprise guests, cast panels, and new footage from some of Blumhouse’s upcoming releases. Notably, going off of what Blumhouse has released so far, this probably isn’t a live show. Expect pre-recorded discussion.

Confirmed high-profile guests at Blumfest include Blumhouse founder Jason Blum; Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios; Ethan Hawke, star of The Good Lord Bird on Showtime; Jamie Lee Curtis, the original scream queen; and Vince Vaughn, who plays a slasher in Blumhouse’s next film Freaky.

The panels at BlumFest include:

  • Jamie Lee Curtis headlines the panel discussion about Blumhouse’s next big thing, the delayed horror sequel Halloween Kills. Its guests will include Blum, director David Gordon Green, Miramax producer Bill Block, and Malek Akkad, long-time Halloween series producer. Akkad is actually the second generation in his family to produce the Halloween franchise, after his late father Moustapha.
  • Blum and Salke discuss the Welcome to the Blumhouse horror anthology that recently began on Amazon Prime Video, which currently consists of four Blumhouse-produced films: The Lie, Nocturne, Evil Eye, and Black Box. The panel will also be attended by Black Box‘s Mamoudou Athie, and unspecified “surprise guests.” Ideally, they will be ghosts.
  • The Craft: Legacy director Zoe Lister-Jones (Life in Pieces) hosts a panel about the film with its stars Cailee Spaeny, Gideon Adlon, Lovie Simone, and Zoey Luna. Legacy, a stand-alone sequel to 1996’s The Craft, is scheduled to premiere via VOD services the day before BlumFest.
  • Blum returns to talk about Blumhouse’s next movie, Freaky, with its writer/director Chris Landon and co-stars Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton. Freaky is a comedy/horror slasher film about a high school misfit who accidentally gets body-swapped with the serial killer who’s working his way through her classmates. Its working title during shooting was Freaky Friday the 13th, so it’s wearing all its influences right there on its sleeve.
  • Hawke and Blum sit down to discuss their current project, the dramedy miniseries The Good Lord Bird, for some reason. Starring Hawke as the American abolitionist John Brown, the notably non-horror Showtime show is the latest in a series of collaborations between Blum and Hawke. Expect discussion of their past work together, which includes a stint at the New York-based theater non-profit Malaparte, as well as Hawke’s starring role in the first Purge movie. Presumably, this panel is just being thrown into the BlumFest mix on the basis that there’s no better place for it; Good Lord Bird has solid buzz and good reviews, but it’s not particularly Halloweeny.

Blumhouse Productions was founded in 2000 by, well, Blum, who got his start at Miramax as a producer before striking out on his own, seemingly motivated by his obvious love of sticking his last name all over everything. Blumhouse’s niche is making small, creator-controlled low-budget movies, most but not all of which are in the horror genre. Its first big hit was 2009’s Paranormal Activity, which cost $230,000 to make, grossed $194 million, and became the start of a long-running “found footage” franchise.

The next movie on Blumhouse’s release schedule is Freaky, which is headed for a theatrical release on November 13th—for however long that plan lasts, considering recent COVID spikes—before hitting video-on-demand services on December 4th.
