Netflix has yet another big announcement for gamers who are looking for something to stream. After recent announcements that the company would be producing two new Resident Evil projects, the streaming service has secured yet another video game property. A recent Tweet features a cross between the Netflix logo and the iconic Assassin’s Creed symbol, with an announcement of a brand new live action series.
All that is known for sure at the moment is that it will almost certainly be yet another Netflix exclusive original show, and that Ubisoft’s own Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik will be serving as executive producers. The teaser gives pretty much nothing away, but does feature the sound of an eagle’s cry, most often associated with the series’ synchronization and leap of faith mechanic. That by itself, isn’t much to speculate with though.
So let’s speculate regardless! The show is intended to be a live action project, which immediately raises the question of whether it will be tied into the previous live action film. While it’s not impossible, this isn’t something that Netflix has done all that often, as getting film actors and similar levels of video effects is often too expensive. There has been no announcement of what actors will be involved or how long the series will run, so it would seem more likely that this will be an entirely original series, disconnected from the other live action film.
With that in mind, the question is raised of whether or not this show will be canon to the games. That seems a much more likely proposition. In universe, characters use a machine called the Animus to relive the memories of their ancestors. As a result this means the series can have a broad overarching story with lots of unconnected stories happening for each installment. Not only that, but the games have confirmed that the battle between Assassins and Templars has raged for most of human civilization, leaving thousands of years where pretty much anything can happen. It wouldn’t be too hard to craft an original story that fits nicely into the scope of the games, and Ubisoft taking a personal interest in the project is a good sign for the level of quality expected. No one will know for sure of course until Netflix announces more details.
