Pokemon Sword and Shield Change Combusken’s Shiny Form

The new expansion for Pokemon Sword and Shield, The Crown Tundra, brings lots of new Pokemon to the game. In the Crown Tundra, shinies are very easy to catch, and one notable shiny has undergone a distinct transformation.

A shiny Pokemon with a relatively sane appearance rate is something unique to Pokemon Sword and Shield. Shiny variants of Pokemon are typically rare, and many players never see one. They do exist though, including variants for starter Pokemon. The palette swaps for these Pokemon, like Combusken, are memorable for their rarity, so when players noticed something different about Combusken’s shiny form they were quick to point it out.

Players noticed that Combusken’s shiny form coloration is different in The Crown Tundra after facing Dynamax Combusken in the Crown Tundra’s Max Lair. The new shiny Combusken no longer has a fiery orange coloration to its legs, eyes, and tuft; instead, these areas are now a deep, heavy red. A big reason this change was noticed so soon was the ease of catching shiny Pokemon in the Crown Tundra. Catching a shiny in a mainline Pokemon game was previously an uncommon event, with some exceptions like entering a code for a shiny Amoonguss.

At the moment, it is unknown why Combusken’s shiny form was changed. It doesn’t have any impact on gameplay, so it can be argued that it doesn’t matter too much, though perhaps the change has to do with how much more ferocious shiny Combusken looks in its new form. The old shiny Combusken’s legs and eyes blended into its body somewhat, while the new one looks fierce through and through. Some of the best fan-made shiny forms emphasize what makes a Pokemon look distinct, and this new shiny Combusken form does exactly that.

The new shiny Combusken can be found in the Max Lair, where it can be battled and caught in Dynamax Form. While joining a Max Lair raid with friends can be tricky, the rewards are often great, and Shiny Pokemon are easier than normal to encounter there, so it’s worth investigating.

Combusken’s new shiny form raises the question of whether other Pokemon will get a similar color change in the future. It wouldn’t hurt to update a few shiny forms or create more alternate forms like the Alolan and Galarian forms. Perhaps if there’s ever a deeper open-world Pokemon game, players will be able to customize their Pokemon at their leisure with alternate colorations or costumes.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available on the Nintendo Switch.
