The last few days of October are around the corner, and Halloween is almost here. Many of the best in-game Halloween events are already in full swing, but not in Rainbow Six: Siege.
Up until now, there has been no hint of a Halloween event in Rainbow Six: Siege. This isn’t too surprising, since the game is pretty rooted in the real world (minus the ridiculous gadgets). A strange and goofy Halloween event might feel a bit out of place, even in the story behind Rainbow Six: Siege‘s world, but it looks like a goofy Halloween event is exactly what players are going to get, and it’s certainly strange, even for an event like this.
Beginning tomorrow and extending into November, Rainbow Six: Siege is hosting an event called Sugar Fright. This was revealed in a trailer showing off a series of firefights in what looks like a new or reworked map. Easily the strangest part of the match is the fact that each character looks like a puppet. The player models look like they are made of felt and googly eyes, resembling Muppet versions of themselves. Rainbow Six: Siege updates have brought tons of new features before, but nothing quite as outlandish as this.
The second weird part of Sugar Fright is the map. It seems to mostly be outside in a nightmarish parody of a small, enclosed town setting. Many things on the map are made of candy or relate to sweets, from huge lollipops to a Cakery Factory. And amidst all of this, the puppet characters are running around shooting each other. Rainbow Six: Siege is connected to a lot of universes, but who knew the Muppets was one of them.
It’s safe to say the gameplay shown is what players can expect in-game. As opposed to previous reveals, like the Sam Fischer animation, this one is all about gameplay. It’s still edited in a goofy fashion, though, and shows off some of the changed effects. Probably the biggest of these is the lack of blood; instead, the puppet characters explode with colored smoke when shot.
This is not the first time that Rainbow Six: Siege has done a Halloween event, but it’s very far from what was done before. Last year’s Halloween event was called Doktor’s Curse and let players play as invisible monsters or wield huge hammers. Whether or not the puppets have different properties or are just skin changes is not yet known. Hopefully the puppet skins will stick around after the event is over. They’re cutesy, disturbing, and well designed.
Rainbow Six: Siege is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with plans for next-gen consoles.
