It’s been almost a full year since the reveal of Bravely Default 2. When it was revealed for the Switch last December, fans of the series rejoiced at having a new series to anticipate, and now there’s more to celebrate.
As part of today’s Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase, more information was revealed about Bravely Default 2. This included an acknowledgement of feedback received from its demo, as well as new info about the game’s world. Perhaps most importantly, a release date was given: As of this writing, Bravely Default 2 will release for the Nintendo Switch on February 26, 2021.
A brief overview of the game’s world was the central focus of the trailer, building of of the info teased by Square Enix earlier this month. The continent of Excillant seems to have similar problems to Luxendarc, once again requiring four heroes to save it from destruction. There was also a section introducing some of the game’s Asterisk Holders – bosses the players must defeat to unlock new jobs for the main characters.
The later release date relative to other upcoming titles is not too surprising, as it has been suggested the Bravely Default 2 development team struggled due to the pandemic. A big part of this was the result of sudden work from home mandates, which many developers were unprepared for. Since then, time in a real studio has let the team progress properly once more, and hopefully this release date leaves enough time to implement everything else the team wants to put into the game.
Another important bit of news that was only briefly touched on in the direct was the results of feedback from the game’s demo. A Bravely Default 2 demo was launched back in March, and the developers encouraged players to send feedback on the game. What that feedback resulted in was expanded on in a separate trailer, which outlined the changes that are being made to the game.
Changes include a difficulty setting that can be changed on the fly, as many felt enemies were too tough in the demo. A series of quality of life improvements are also made, largely to menus and battle screens. One interesting feature involves enemies on the overworld map, which now flee from the player or glow red depending on their relative power compared to the player. Everything known about Bravely Default 2 so far looks like it could make for an explosive release in February, but only time will tell for sure.
Bravely Default 2 releases February 26, 2021 for Nintendo Switch.
