Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity Demo Out Now on Switch

The Nintendo Switch’s holiday release schedule may not be as robust as many Nintendo fans were hoping for. But one September announcement surprised fans, giving them a holiday season launch worth getting excited about. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity delivers a prequel experience for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild as fans wait for news regarding the sequel. And now fans won’t even have to wait until later November to try Hyrule Warriors, as Nintendo has launched a surprise demo.

It was surprise after surprise this morning, as Nintendo announced an impromptu Nintendo Direct focused on games from its third-party partners. Omega Force, a subsidiary of Koei Tecmo and the developer of Hyrule Warriors, was one of those partners. What looked to be at first a simple gameplay trailer led to the revelation that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity had a demo. Better yet, the demo was already available for Nintendo Switch owners to download and play.

The demo is quite substantial, too. It includes the entirety of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity‘s first chapter, which should provide a ripe playground to experiment with gameplay. Three different characters will also be available in the demo. Players can choose Link or Zelda, the most obvious of options, but can also play as Impa.

There’s quite a bit of substance in the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity demo just beyond pure content, too. Nintendo’s confirmed that the demo can be played not just solo, but cooperatively via local two-player mode. No online support is available just yet, as the team prepares for launch. Speaking of launch, Nintendo’s also confirmed that all progress made in the Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity demo can be carried over to launch via save file.

Nintendo’s demo for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity provides just the option for fans of Breath of the Wild who were unsure whether to pick up the new musou game. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is set 100 years prior to the events of Breath of the Wild and will fill in a key part of the story left unexplored in Nintendo’s action-adventure game. It may even tease some of what’s to come in Breath of the Wild 2.

Needless to say, the demo will only offer a partial glimpse at what’s available in the full game. Not only with their be a full story campaign filled with epic stages, but there are at least seven playable characters including the four Champions, Mipha, Daruk, Urbosa, and Revali. Expect to hear more about the game leading up to its release.
