Jon Stewart made his name as the biggest name in political comedy with his legendary run as host of The Daily Show. Stewart took over from previous host Craig Kilborn and turned the show into comedy powerhouse, garnering unprecedented acclaim and launching the careers of countless other comedians such as Stephen Colbert and Jon Oliver. After he retired from the show in 2015, Stewart kept his head down for a while, mostly working on smaller projects without much media buzz. Just recently however, Stewart has signed a deal with Apple to return to television in a big way.
The deal is a multi-year contract to work on TV shows with Apple, and will begin with a brand new current affairs show. Funnily enough, it seems the show will be taking a great deal of inspiration from Last Week Tonight, hosted by Daily Show alumnus Jon Oliver, being an hour long show with each episode dedicated to a single topic. This version will be more focused on Stewart’s own interests though, with a statement that says the project “will explore topics that are currently part of the national conversation and [Stewart’s] advocacy work.”
Apple seems pretty excited to have Stewart on board, and little intention of letting him go. So much so that they’ve already signed on to multiple seasons of this new show which doesn’t even have a name yet. They’ve also partnered with Stewart’s production company Busboy Productions in order to explore new projects and shows that could be picked up and developed. It certainly seems to be a natural fit for Stewart, picking up and continuing his legacy as a premier satirist with a few modern touches, though it remains to be seen how the current state of the world has affected his particular outlook.
That might be a sticking point as well. Though Stewart only left his post in 2015, the world has changed greatly since he last sat behind the desk. Both the political landscape, and political commentary, have undergone huge shifts in tone and perspective. It will be interesting to see how Stewart updates his act for a modern era, and if he can live up to his own successors. Audiences will have to wait for the show to be released to see if the king of political comedy can reclaim his crown.
