Mass Effect 3: How To Build The Best Sentinel | Game Rant

Mass Effect 3 has six classes. There are three pure classes, which focus on a particular type of skill: Soldier (combat), Adept (biotics), and Engineer (tech). The Sentinel is a hybrid class, and combines biotics with tech.

Sentinels are known as the jack-of-all-trades class and are adaptable to almost any situation. With their wide range of useful skills and powers, including Tech Armor which combines defense with offense, Sentinels are the backbone of the battlefield and are a fun and dynamic class to explore.

10 Tech Armor

Tech Armor is the core skill of the Sentinel. When activated, it gives the Sentinel an additional layer of protection, and can be manually discharged to cause damage to enemies nearby.

The use of tech armor greatly influences the Sentinel’s playstyle. Having Tech Armor active dramatically decreases power cooldowns and recharges, which makes it difficult to use the array of abilities available to the Sentinel. Heavy weapons to compensate increases cooldown times. The Sentinel can then make use of Tech Armor and use powerful weapons to play the role of a tank on the battlefield. Alternatively, Tech Armor can be ignored in favor of using other powers and abilities with fast cooldown times.

9 Tech Powers

Tech powers is one of the cornerstones of the Sentinel. Tech skills automatically given to the Sentinel are Tech Armor, Cryo Blast, and Overload. Overload is one of the most useful tech skills in the game, and can devastate shields and synthetics. Cryo Blast is also incredibly helpful when large or powerful enemies need to be slowed down.

Lift Grenade is useful as it’s an ammo power that doesn’t consume recharge time, but it’s only helpful when fully upgraded, and should be avoided in favor of other, more useful, skills.

8 Biotics

A Sentinel’s biotics are incredibly helpful, and consist of Warp and Throw. Warp remains one of the best biotic powers in the game, and is great at taking down armored targets. Warp can be detonated in a Biotic Explosion to become even more deadly, and choosing the upgrade Pierce increases its potency against armored enemies.

Throw is a lot like Shockwave in that it’s designed to remove enemies from cover. It can also detonate Biotic Explosions set up by Warp and scatter groups of enemies. Choose the Detonate upgrade to make Biotic Explosions all the more potent.

7 Bonus Power

Bonus powers effective for Sentinels depend largely on the playstyle chosen. Tank Sentinels who use Tech Armor would do well to choose a bonus power that adds protection, like Defense Matrix, Barrier, or Fortification. Fortification can be upgraded to the point that damage absorption with Tech Armor goes up to 90%, with the caveat of dramatically increasing load times, but is incredibly helpful to Tanks who use weapons rather than powers.

A bonus power useful for all Sentinel builds is Armor-Piercing Ammo. Sentinels do not get an ammo power, and Armor-Piercing Ammo is the best one to fill that gap as it can allow the Sentinel to shoot through light cover and take down armored enemies with brutal efficiency. Combining this ammo power with Warp means the Sentinel is primed to tear through enemies.

6 Detonations

Detonations can be a Sentinel’s specialty, and their skillset means they can set off nearly all the detonations in the game on their own. The Recharge Combo upgrade resets Throw’s cooldown time when Throw triggers a detonation, making the Sentinel a powerhouse for powerful explosions across the battlefield. This makes it a better option over the alternate upgrade, Detonate, despite its 50% increase in force and damage.

Tech Bursts are also easy to pull off with Overload and Warp, which are devastating to synthetics like Geth. Cry Blast is also useful as a primer, but isn’t as effective as a power as Overload.

5 Offensive Mastery

Offensive Mastery is the passive class skill for the Sentinel, and is centered on the core abilities of the Sentinel class. These include weight capacity, power damage and duration, weapon damage, and reputation bonuses.

Skill upgrades which have the highest reputation bonuses are recommended for players who are interested and invested in the story. Boosts to reputation affects your Paragon and Renegade scores, and these boosts not only increase the points you have, but also increase the odds of opening options for pivotal story moments. These upgrades are also connected to weight capacity increases, which is crucial to lowering the rate of cooldown times.

4 Fitness

Fitness is a passive skill that every class has. It increases melee damage, improves shields, and increases health.

Fitness is important when considering the durability of the Sentinel. Shield Recharge at Rank 5 reduces the shield recharge delay by 15%, which is vital for Sentinels who don’t use Tech Armor or any of the other defensive bonus powers. Health and shield bonuses are also especially helpful for Sentinels who forego Tech Armor, while Melee Synergy, which increases melee damage and damage protection, would be useful for Tanks involved in close-combat.

3 Weapons

The Sentinel is the most flexible class, and that’s reflected in the weapon selection available to them. One of the best weapons for the Sentinel is the assault rifle, as it deals heavy damage for a relatively lightweight weapon.

Weapon selection is more important for a tank Sentinel than a power-based attacker. As the tank Sentinel’s primary damage output is from weapons, cooldown and weight capacity is no longer a concern. Shotguns are a good option in this case, especially the M-300 Claymore or the Wraith. Combining the shotgun with Armor-Piercing Ammo and Warp means armored opponents and higher level enemies, even Geth Primes, Banshees, and Brutes, will be easily defeated.

2 Squad

As a flexible class, the Sentinel has few weak points, and serves more to support their squad. As a biotic and tech based class, pure Soldier companions like James and Ashley are good options if you need firepower. As a biotic, Liara’s Singularity sets up detonations and makes up for the Sentinels lack of crowd control.

Garrus’ tech powers supplement and augment the Sentinel’s, while his weapons and Concussive Shot provide firepower the Sentinel lacks. Tali is a great companion on missions with synthetics, and her tech powers alongside the Sentinels mean Geth and other synthetic enemies don’t last long against them.

1 Tactics

One of the best things about the Sentinel is their ability to adapt to any situation. Even if the Sentinel is geared more towards Tank, powers and abilities are still options, and so the Sentinel is always equipped for almost any situation.

The signature move of the Sentinel is discharging Tech Armor to damage any surrounding enemies. Once enemies are staggered by the armor, the Sentinel can then use a weapon or Throw to get some space. More important is the Sentinel’s ability to set up and detonate a wide range of explosions, the most of all the other classes.
