PlayStation App Update Adds Major New Features | Game Rant

Sony announced an update for the PlayStation app that will roll out on Android and iOS today. The update will add a new user interface, a natively-integrated PlayStation store with remote downloads, and more. The updated features will allow users to manage their PlayStation consoles, keep track of PSN messages, and access general PlayStation news.

Along with the updated UI, the PlayStation app will integrate messaging and discontinue the standalone PS Messages app. However, all threads and messages will be moved to the newly-updated PlayStation app. Voice chat will also be an added feature, allowing users to create party groups of up to 15 friends. The voice chat is an exciting addition to the mobile app, however the controversial PlayStation 4 update 8.00 may affect users.

The PS4 update 8.00 received substantial backlash from the player community because of party chat changes when it was released. The update removed many features that players regularly used and warned users that others would be able to record their voice chat. Sony issued a statement that it is looking into the feedback, but said in the current PS app update that there is no new information, and feedback is still being evaluated. It is possible that Sony will revert the voice chat changes, but would most likely be around the PS5 release, because the updates will function across both consoles.

The update does not officially confirm cross-gen party chat, but the integration of messages and voice chat on the mobile app seem to be a good sign. Based on source code from the PlayStation website, voice chat may work across the PS4, PS5, and the PlayStation app. The source code also references features like a 100-player party and party customization, but Sony has yet to confirm the features.

The PlayStation app will have even more features when the PS5 releases. Through the mobile app, users will be able to sign in to the PS5, manage storage, and download games remotely. The natively-integrated PlayStation store will also allow users to purchase and download PS4 and PS5 games and add-ons straight to the consoles.

The PlayStation app will also feature an explore tab, which will display news from developers and the PS blog for players to stay up-to-date on the latest releases and updates. The added features will look to integrate PS4 and PS5 players and will make PS store shopping, PlayStation game downloading, and console management more convenient.
