With the November 12 release date for the PS5 being so close to now, the hype for Sony’s latest console is building up. As with all products, a global launch trailer has been released to announce what exactly the PS5 will bring to the table, not in terms of specs and numbers, but the philosophy and spirit driving its many innovations.
To further build hype, the trailer is narrated by none other than rapper Travis Scott, who was recently added to Sony’s ranks as a “strategic creative partner.” The tangible returns of the Houston rapper’s involvement with the PS5 are expected to be the eventual Travis Scott x PlayStation collab merch line and the new Nike SB Dunk Low colorway peeped in his first PS5 ad, which paid tribute to the iconic “Blown Away Guy” line of Maxell advertisements.
The PS5 global launch ad, themed around exploration, features Scott narrating over dramatic footage of explorers in extreme weather conditions such as torrential rain or a heavy blizzard. The iconic PlayStation button shapes are featured in situations like marking a map with the red circle or the X on a watch. Scott, who has also collaborated with Fortnite, speaks about wanting to “see what’s never been seen, hear what’s never been heard, feel what’s never been felt” and of “new worlds to explore.”
The PS5 has become perhaps the most anticipated console release of all-time, with its pre-order sales already outpacing those of the PS4. A launch ad like this, especially with a name as big as Travis Scott’s attached, should further fuel what is already a fast-moving hype train. With a host of premier launch titles including the Demon’s Souls remake and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the PS5 is set to have a massive impact on the gaming industry through its impressive technical specs that should allow for ray-tracing and 4K output.
As for Travis Scott, 2020 has been a banner year for the Grammy Award-nominated rapper. His songs “THE SCOTTS” in collaboration with his idol Kid Cudi and “Franchise” featuring fellow American rapper Young Thug and British rapper M.I.A. became Scott’s third and fourth US number one singles respectively. Scott also wrote “The Plan” for the soundtrack of Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster Tenet.
Besides the aforementioned Fortnite collab, Scott also collaborated with McDonald’s this year to bring the first celebrity-endorsed meal since Michael Jordan in 1992. Scott and McDonald’s also launched a line of collab merch including clothing items, a basketball, and a McNugget-shaped body pillow.
The PlayStation 5 will release in North America and select countries on November 12 and on November 19 for the rest of the world.
