Whenever a console generation comes to a close and new pieces of hardware are readying for release, rumors start feverishly swirling about the capabilities and games. With the PlayStation 5 less than a month away, fans are finally starting to learn which of these rumors are true and which are complete fabrications.
Even though these rumors surrounding the PS5’s hardware and games turned out to be true, one should always take them with a grain of salt. Taking all of them as 100% fact can lead to a lot of disappointment among enthusiastic fans.
10 New Controller
Long before the DualSense was revealed, rumors were swirling about the various changes to come to the standard controller, which has remain largely unchanged since the PS1’s DualShock. Certain patents gave fans ideas as to how it would work. Upon the controller’s official reveal, most of these rumors turned out to be completely true. While it looks funny, those who have spent hands-on time with it say the controller feels great, though it is difficult to say how many games will take advantage of its unique features.
9 God Of War Sequel
After God of War: Ascension, many were unsure of the series’ future. Fortunately, all worries were put to rest upon 2018’s God of War release, which turned out to be one of the best games of the generation.
It only made sense for a sequel to come about, though rumors of a 2021 release date were denied by director Cory Barlog earlier this year. A recent PS5 showcase proved this to be true, however.
8 Backwards Compatibility
Speculation was high that Sony would make backwards compatibility as extensive as Microsoft’s efforts. While the PlayStation 5 will not run games from the first three generations of Sony’s consoles, it will play almost every PlayStation 4 game right out of the box. Even better, many of the games will have improvements to performance, particularly the frame rate.
7 Gran Turismo 7
This game was rumored back in May, but it took until the next month to finally be revealed as Gran Turismo 7. The series has always been a technical showcase, even dating back to the series’ debut on the original PlayStation, and the seventh-numbered entry will surely be no different. It will be difficult to translate how gorgeous Gran Turismo 7 actually looks until someone boots it up on their PlayStation 5 and sees it on their TV as opposed to an internet stream.
6 Resident Evil VIII
It would not be a Resident Evil game if details weren’t leaked prior to the official announcement. The setting was already revealed through leaks before the debut trailer. But even with some of the details spoiled, finally seeing it in action was a delight.
The game is currently set as a next-generation exclusive, promising no load times during gameplay. Resident Evil has been on a roll in the past few years, and Resident Evil VIII: Village looks to continue the winning streak.
5 VR Compatibility
While still bleeding edge technology, one of the most accessible ways to experience VR is through PlayStation VR. It is still a pricy investment, but Sony is supporting the format and several highly-acclaimed games either support VR or are only playable through it.. While there’s been no confirmation about a true successor to the format, all take about the current headsets functioning on the new console is true.
4 Demon’s Souls Remake
Early reporting on the PlayStation 5 involved Bluepoint Games. The developer revealed their upcoming project was the most ambitious one yet. After this, rumors and theories swirled as to what the game could be, and ranging from a Metal Gear Solid remake to a Demon’s Souls update. The latter was the golden ticket, and now the upcoming remake is one of the most highly anticipated games for the new console.
3 SSD
The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 made hard drives a normal feature of every console, removing the need for memory cards. It also normalized downloading entire games onto the system, thus eliminating discs altogether. The next step after HDD was SSD, a more efficient storage unit which can stream data at significantly faster speeds. This was one of the first features confirmed for the PS5, and immediately set fans’ imaginations racing as to the implications of the drive in every console.
2 Final Fantasy XVI
Before the presentation where Sony finally revealed the price and release date of the PlayStation 5, rumors started coming out of the woodwork detailing a reveal of Final Fantasy XVI. Given the three years since Final Fantasy XV, it seemed like the right time for the next entry to reveal itself soon. Not only was the project announced, but the trailer showed more of the game than any other announcement teaser for a Final Fantasy game in almost two decades.
1 Lightning-Fast Load Times
This is admittedly less of a rumor and more Sony putting their money where their mouth is. The first look at the PS5 well over a year ago detailed how fast it could load up New York City in Insomniac’s Spider-Man game. Almost eliminating load times seems too good to be true, but certain games like Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart and Resident Evil VIII are taking advantage of the SSD to present seamless worlds lacking load times. The former is especially impressive with how quickly the duo transport to a completely different environment.
