Days Gone has been out for over a year now, and with the game being purely single player it is easy to assume that no more updates are being made. However, Days Gone has received an update seemingly out of nowhere, and the latest patch comes in at a massive 25 GB.
The likely cause for the patch is the imminent arrival of the PS5 and its PlayStation Plus Collection, which features a massive lineup of some of the biggest PS4 games. The collection will make the games free to download for active PS Plus subscribers on PS5, and the includes Days Gone as one of its titles. Bend Studio seems to be preparing for the game’s place in the collection through this patch, as the notes for the update offer nothing outside of stability improvements.
The huge file size brings fixes for framerate drops and crashing issues, as well as other unspecified stability updates for performance issues the game previously had. While it is a bit odd to see Days Gone updated this late into its life cycle, stability improvements are welcome regardless of when they come. The new update makes no mention of the Days Gone Ghost Rider bug, so Marvel fans can likely still turn Deacon St. John into the cursed character on next-gen consoles as well.
It is worth noting that Days Gone is not the only older game to suddenly get a patch ahead of the PS Plus Collection’s arrival. The Last of Us Remastered was updated recently to practically remove loading screens, a change that has had a major impact on speedrunners. While Days Gone’s update does not seem to be making the same massive changes, it still seems likely to improve the game’s performance quite a bit.
Sony seems to be doing all it can to make Days Gone and its other PS Plus Collection games as smooth as possible, likely pushing its first party developers to update their games regardless of age. As such, the PS5 version of Days Gone should be a better version of the decently-reviewed game, though it seems like PS4 players will benefit as well. With the PS Plus Collection adding two more games recently, Days Gone is surrounded by plenty of popular titles.
For players who want to experience the changes made to the game right away, Days Gone has been added to PlayStation Now as well. For those waiting on the PS5’s release, they will not need to wait much longer, as the console and its collection of PS Plus games arrive in just a few weeks.
Days Gone is available now on PlayStation 4. A PS5 version will be included in the PS Plus Collection on November 12.
