Final Fantasy 16 takes place in the world of Valisthea, a place filled with mountain-sized Mothercrystals that are so big that they tower over the realms that worship them. The Mothercrstals bless those who pay homage with aether, the ability to control and use magicks that let people live comfortable lives. Over time, great nations have formed around these crystals, with a long-lasting peace between them until recent events. Each nation is home to an Eikon, powerful creatures that are summoned by individuals called Dominants. While some nations admire the Eikons, others use them for war.

Three main characters where revealed for Final Fantasy 16 with the main character being Clive Rosfield. Clive is a First Shield of Rosaria and a protector of his brother, Joshua. Due to his brother’s capabilities, Clive has the ability to wield part of his power. Joshua is the Archduke of Rosaria and the Dominant of the nation with Phoenix being the nations Eikon. Alongside them is Jill Warrick, although Rosaria is not her first home, she resides there as part of a peace agreement between Rosaria and the fallen Northern Territories.

Now that basic development of Final Fantasy 16 is completed, Square has revealed the locations of the game, starting with The Grand Duchy of Rosaria, a western nation formed by several smaller provinces. Rosaria draws its Aerther from Drake’s Breath, a Mothercrystal located on a volcanic island. Rosaria is the home of Clive, Joshua, and Jill.

The next location is a large theocratic nation called The Holy Empire of Sanbreque. This place was built around Drake’s Head and the people worship the Emperor as the one true Deity. While Square has yet to reveal the Eikon of this nation, it is known that the Dominant is considered this nation’s champion and participates in wars when needed, with Square promising a more mature take on the series, it’s likely these battles aren’t for the feint a heart.

The Kingdom of Waloed was also revealed, located in the entire eastern half of the planet. While dominion of the Kingdom is often tested by orcs and beastmen who also live there, Waloed and its people have maintained dominion by relying on the power of the Mothercrystal called Drake’s Spine.

At the heart of Valisthea is the Crystalline Dominion, built around the Mothercrystal Drake’s Tail. The Crystalline Dominion has held many battles for dominance until a peace treaty was agreed to. The Crystalline Dominion is shared by all surrounding nations where each realm enjoys equal claim.

The final two Kingdoms revealed are The Dhalmekian Republic and the Iron Kingdom. The Dhalmekian Republic, which is located in the south and near the Mothercrystal Drake’s Fang, is ruled by parliament with the Dominant of the nation being Titan. The Iron Kingdom is located west where a worshipping group known as the Crystalline Orthodox is located. The Iron Kingdom Controls Drake’s Breath and consider Dominants to be abominations.

Final Fantasy 16 will launch on PC and PlayStation 5
