New PSN Avatars Teased by PlayStation | Game Rant

With a new generation right around the corner, there are many details that have the video game world excited. From the new intricacies of platform menus to even new additions to achievements and trophies, in just under two weeks fans will get the chance to experience them all first hand. Yet one company is adding a little more to its current gen console in preparation for its upcoming hardware release.

The official PlayStation Twitter account uploaded a PlayStation 4 screen capture showing off a new set of avatars coming to the platform soon. The collection is seemingly integrated with the upcoming PlayStation 5 launch on November 13 as these new “pre-set” avatars feature images from upcoming titles.

When compared to Sony’s previous update to the free avatar collection that released earlier this month, it seems that Sony has provided a clear number for how many new profile pics will be added. Based on the tweet by PlayStation, it notes 1351 avatars under the “All” category with no premium avatars listed. By looking back at the earlier update to avatars with the PlayStation 4’s patch 8.0, a screen capture noted 1314 under the same criteria. That means the soon to release update will introduce 37 new avatars. So with only 24 avatars shown in the screen image, there are 13 unknown ones.

The sample selection of avatars is clearly geared to welcome the PlayStation 5 in two weeks. Some of the games shown include two major launch titles with Sackboy: A Big Adventure and a single avatar for the Demon’s Souls remake. The other major titles included in the set are new avatars from the Horizon franchise as well as the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart.

While it might not be the most glamorous aspect to show off ahead of the PlayStation 5, it does add some needed customization options for those joining the PlayStation ecosystem for the first time. With a now giant collection of avatars to choose from for free, there should definitely be an option for everyone. While the new free collection is welcomed, it does come at a point where Sony has recently altered how “Premium” avatars are purchased. With the new Sony webstore, players can no longer buy avatars or themes from the browser based version of the store.

So while it might seem like a small addition with a new whole system on the horizon, more customization options are always a welcomed sight for the massive PlayStation Network userbase. Hopefully once the PlayStation 5 is out Sony continues release more avatars for the already huge free collection.
