New Epic Games Store Free Games for October 2020 Are Perfect for Halloween

The Epic Games launcher serves as a convenient place to not only access owned games but purchase new ones. In the spirit of Halloween, Epic Games has specifically selected 2019’s Blair Witch and 2009’s Ghostbusters: The Video Game to give its weekly free game giveaway a seasonally spooky theme.

Extending its weekly free games service throughout 2020, Epic Games’ service promises that once the entire game is downloaded, not a demo, it’s the downloader’s to enjoy forever. Similar to the now dated Xbox’s Games With Gold service, grabbing these full-fledged titles has proven a great way to not only bolster one’s games library, but occasionally catch up on noteworthy games they might have missed.

It’s no accident that both games available free for download are inspired by films associated with the season. Bloober Teams’ Blair Witch is an adaptation of the film, bringing a survival horror perspective to the source material. Given the studio’s impressive track record with the psychological horror genre, bringing the 90s horror phenomenon to the PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a later port to the Nintendo Switch, proved a worthwhile fit for the property. Despite serving up some legitimate scares, Blair Witch released to mixed reviews, though the game’s impressive sound design is still worth experiencing, especially now through the Epic Games store.

The second available free game based on the Halloween staple, both on screen and in costume, Ghostbusters: The Video Game remains one of the most fun homages to the franchise. Jam-packed with trivia, nods to the lore, and easter eggs, Ghostbusters: The Video Game doesn’t compromise on fun level design or gameplay. Putting the player in the proton pack, the ghostbusters trainee experience ensues, with voice acting from each of the stars of the film lending an extra level of authenticity to the continuation of the Ghostbusters story. Fans looking for a scarier spin on parapsychology might also want to check out Phasmophobia‘s ghost hunting.

Epic Games has ensured its October offerings cover both the frightening and fun aspects of Halloween. Fortunately, with several Halloween themed gatherings canceled and trick-or-treating effectively outlawed in many parts of the country, Epic Games has seemingly timed the releases of its most recent round of free games to ensure anyone staying in for Halloween this year will have plenty of free games to catch up on, costumes optional. Or at the very least capitalizing on their limited time Halloween sales.
