Pokemon Sword and Shield‘s last piece of DLC, the Crown Tundra expansion, is now available and fans appear to be more than happy with it. Aside from including some new Legendary Pokemon to catch, such as the two Regi titans Regidrago and Regieleki, plenty of familiar faces from the past games have returned, like the Hoenn starters, previous fossil Pokemon, and even the Ultra Beasts from Sun and Moon.
One Pokemon in particular many are happy to see back is Dragonite, the original Dragon type from the first generation of games, Red and Blue. Aside from being incredibly powerful, its popularity also stems from it being the star member of Lance’s team, one of the series’ Champions. In the current anime series, even Ash got one as part of his team.
While Dragonite usually could only be obtained by evolving it from a Dragonair, Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield‘s Crown Tundra DLC makes it possible for players to encounter one in the wild. However, if done this way, players will have to deal with a minor but rather bizarre bug.
First discovered by Joe Merrick of Serebii, an error within the game’s code has caused a mistake in Dragonite’s move pool. It and its two evolutions are able to learn the move Outrage through leveling up. Dratini gets it at level 55 and Dragonair gets it at level 67. So, Dragonite should learn the move at an even higher level, especially since Dragonair evolves into it at level 55, but it instead learns it at level 41.
It most likely was meant to learn Outrage at level 71, but this mistake effectively means that, if a player levels up their Dragonite normally or catches one in the wild, it won’t ever learn this move naturally. Fortunately, this bug isn’t game-ruining or anything and there are some workarounds.
Firstly, a player can simply hold off on evolving their Dratini or Dragonair until it learns Outrage. Secondly, a Dragonite transferred from Pokemon GO or Pokemon Let’s Go via Pokemon Home won’t be affected by it. And lastly, players can easily take their Dragonite to a Move Relearner in a Pokemon Center and simply teach it Ourage there. While it’s unlikely to be a priority, hopefully Game Freak will issue an update or patch that will rectify the issue sometime soon.
Despite a number of old Pokemon being added in The Crown Tundra, there is still a massive list of absent Pokemon. With no further DLC confirmed, it’s very likely that these Pokemon may not reappear at all and fans will have to wait for the inevitable Generation 9 games.
In other news, some players may be interested to learn that the new Dynamax Adventures feature actually makes it slightly easier to encounter Shiny Pokemon, and that includes the Legendaries.
