Monster Hunter Rise Video Demonstrates Great Sword Combat

Monster Hunter Rise is taking the franchise’s two identities, the newer concepts from Monster Hunter World and the classic Monster Hunter experience found in other games, and merging them into one. The newest trailer shows off some of this by letting players see the Greatsword weapon in action. A lot of it will feel familiar to long time fans, but there are some changes that make it stand out a lot.

Monster Hunter Rise will release on the Switch on March 26, 2021, and promises to bring a whole new level of verticality to the franchise. In order to deliver on this promise, Capcom has introduced the Wire Bug. This helpful insect allows the hunter to grapple, swing, and propel his way through the environments in the game, and can even be used to enhance combat.

While most of the Greatswords moveset remains the same (with the iconic triple charge attack still being its highest damage attack), it has some new moves relating to the Wire Bug. The technique showed off in the trailer is called Hunting Edge, and it sees the hunter fly into the air by using the Wire Bug only to come slamming back down on their opponent.

The biggest take away from Greatsword players here is a huge boost to mobility. Typically speaking, the Greatsword is the slowest of all weapons in the game, and its users have to plan ahead in order to ensure their attacks land and the enemy’s don’t. With the Wire Bug, mobility won’t be quite as much of an issue, allowing for a more aggressive playstyle that should please veterans and newcomers alike.

Monster Hunter Rise releases on Nintendo Switch on March 26, 2021.
