WWE’s Paige Criticizes Company Amid Twitch Controversy

As the world continues to grapple with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, WWE has done away with its rigorous live event schedule, focusing purely on TV and pay-per-views. Prior to the pandemic, WWE wrestlers were on the road constantly, but now they have a lot of downtime, and many have used that downtime to pursue other interests, like Twitch streaming. Despite WWE wrestlers being labeled as independent contractors, WWE has taken control of their Twitch accounts – a decision that has caused quite the uproar, even drawing criticism from politicians like Andrew Yang.

One WWE star who has been especially active on Twitch, Saraya-Jade Bevis, aka Paige, has repeatedly spoken out against the company’s decision to take control of talents’ Twitch streams. In a recent Twitch stream, Paige continued criticizing WWE. “I’m f***ing tired, man. I broke my f***ing neck twice, twice, for this company, dude. Over-f***ing-worked. I broke my f****ing neck twice for this company.”

Paige then commented on how the situation isn’t about her Twitch subs or the money she makes from streaming, but rather the community. She also explained that her Twitch streaming career helped fill the void that was left when she retired from wrestling. “I can’t wrestle anymore. I always worked so hard in WWE that I can’t wrestle anymore. My neck is f***ed. My whole f***ing dreams got taken away from me, dude, and I had to have something that fulfilled that huge f***ing void that I lost with wrestling.”

Please not that the following clip has some offensive language.

For those who may not be aware, Paige suffered multiple neck injuries during her time as a WWE wrestler, with the incidents requiring surgery. The most recent neck injury occurred during a WWE house show on December 27, 2017, after she took a kick to the back from Sasha Banks. Paige hasn’t returned to in-ring competition in the WWE since, retiring from active competition at the young age of 25.

Since retiring from being an active wrestler, Paige has had various on-screen roles with the WWE. The most high profile of these saw her serve as the General Manager of SmackDown. When that was done, Paige managed the Kabuki Warriors tag team of Asuka and Kairi Sane, as well as performed as one of the contributors for the WWE Backstage show, which was suspended by FS1 on June 22 of this year.

With WWE Backstage done with, Paige has not made many appearances on WWE television, so the company isn’t even using her in a non-wrestling capacity. It will be interesting to see if WWE ultimately releases Paige from her contract to allow her to pursue her Twitch streaming aspirations, or if some other compromise can be reached.
