The PlayStation 4 released in November of 2013 and has served Sony fans well in the seven years since. It even managed to convert a significant portion of Xbox’s player base into PlayStation owners. After all this time, however, it is will soon be put to rest as people start purchasing next-generation consoles.
The PlayStation 5 is coming out November 12th and seeks to improve on the PlayStation 4 in every conceivable way. While many will still be playing their PS4s in the coming months as they save up for Sony’s newest toy, most cannot wait to test out many of the new features the current console simply cannot hope to replicate.
10 Ultra HD Blu-Ray Player
Streaming has since become the dominant form of entertainment when it comes to watching movies and television shows, though some still prefer physical media since it guarantees a great image without worrying about an internet connection. The PlayStation 5 takes a step up in this department with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, which will deliver a 4K image and sixty frames per second for the few movies that actually support it.
9 Hint System
Some players need a little help journeying through certain games. Instead of looking up guides on the internet and risk running into spoilers, select games will include hint systems integrated into the console’s UI.
This feature was showcased a few weeks prior during Sony’s presentation displaying the features of the new UI while playing Sackboy: A Big Adventure, a new 3D platformer starring Sony’s beloved mascot.
8 Watching Gameplay Streams While Playing
The PS4 already includes the ability to watch a friend’s gameplay stream on one’s own console. However, the PS5 will take this a step further and let people watch the gameplay of others while still continuing their own session. This is just one of the many improvements to the party system promised on the PS5. This will make it easier for friends to keep in touch with each other’s gaming.
7 Nearly Eliminating Load Times
Sony is heavily touting the new SSD and the advantages it gives to upcoming hardware. Mainly. Most games will significantly shorten or even completely eliminate load times. Games will also boot up at a notably quicker rate than before. Load times are still such an issue with certain games, so seeing them become a thing of the past will be a revelation for the gameplay experience.
6 DualSense
Not every improvement is coming from the console. Along with the PS5 comes a brand new controller, dubbed the DualSense. In addition to a sleek new design, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers look to enhance gameplay beyond what is happening on screen. Vibration is now more subtle and more accurately responds to what is happening on screen, and adaptive triggers make it harder to push them in depending on the action. Early impressions from those who have played Astro’s Playroom say nothing but good things about the controller’s new features.
5 Demon’s Souls
While the PS5 has a nice launch lineup, the majority of games coming are also making their way to the PS4. One notable exception is Bluepoint Games’ remake of Demon’s Souls, the cult classic by FromSoftware originally released on the PS3. One look and it is clear why this is a PS5 exclusive; the visuals are jaw-droopingly gorgeous. The developer is renowned for incredible remakes and remasters, and this upcoming title looks to live up to this reputation.
4 Performance Capture In 4K
Like the PS4, the PS5 will always be recording recent gameplay, allowing players to snap photos and save gameplay which they can then edit and share. Where PS5 beats out its predecessor is the quality of the footage.
Performance capture is set to come in at beautiful 4K quality, trumping the regular HD quality players are so used to. Obviously, only those with the right television will be able to take full advantage of this, but the price of 4K TVs decreases with each passing year.
3 Ray Tracing
PC players have been basking in the glory of ray tracing for a couple of years now, with titles like Control showcasing it in all its glory. The only PS4 game to use it is the Crysis remaster. The PS5 is set to have the feature built into the hardware, making it significantly easier for any game to have the advanced lighting technique. Seeing it in a trailer is one thing, but seeing it in action during gameplay will be a whole different ballgame.
2 120 Frames Per Second
As of now, the smoothest games get is 60 frames per second. Even then, few titles actually reach this point. With the new console’s increased power, one should expect to see smoother frame rates all around, especially early in its life. In fact, certain games will even allow for double this frame rate. One needs an HDMI 2.1 in order to achieve this, and those are not cheap, but it will be worth it for a smoother gaming session.
1 Backwards Compatibility
Ten years ago this was not such a big issue for consumers. With Xbox’s focus on it, Sony needs to step up its game and include backwards compatibility for all future consoles. While the PS5s implementation of backwards compatibility is not as extensive as its competitor’s, it still has the ability to play almost every PS4 game. The PS4 only plays games from its generation, somewhat of a weak spot for the hardware.
