5 FPS Games We Wish Were Ported To Consoles (& 5 That Can’t Be)

First-person shooters used to be the domain of the PC. While exceptions existed in the ’90s like Goldeneye 007Perfect Dark, and Medal of Honor, it was not until Halo: Combat Evolved came out in 2001 that the genre started to become more comfortable on other platforms.

These days, most FPS games make their way to both PCs and consoles, and a bunch of classics have already been ported from their exclusive PC hardware. However, a select few titles are still stuck on the home computer. Five of the ten games below really need to make their way to PlayStation or Xbox, while the other five will probably be stuck on PC forever.

10 Wish Would Get Ported: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

This game from Ukrainian developer GSC Game World is finally receiving a sequel after over a decade. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is set to be a Microsoft exclusive. With all the excitement surrounding the upcoming second part, it seems like as good a time as ever to finally bring the original open-world first-person shooter to consoles. Until then, the closest console gamers have is the Metro series, since developer 4A games is made up of people from GSC Game World.

9 Cannot Be Ported: System Shock

Warren Spector has numerous iconic games under his belt, including Deus Ex. Before then, he designed System Shock, an atmospheric science fiction title set aboard a space station. The older control scheme from 1994 would make it extremely hard to map to a gamepad. Nightdive Studios is currently working on a remake, which will hopefully be easier to play on PlayStation and Xbox controllers.

8 Wish Would Be Ported: Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault

While console owners in the early aughts were enjoying Medal of Honor: Frontline’s intensely satisfying single-player campaign, PC players were playing Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.

Designed by Vince Zampella and Jason West, one feels much of Call of Duty’s DNA while destroying the axis powers. Frontline also did not include multiplayer upon release, while Allied Assault includes a whole suite of competitive offerings.

7 Cannot Be Ported: Team Fortress

While this entry talks about the classic mod which eventually spawned a standalone release and a sequel, it could just as well be talking about the modern state of Team Fortress 2. The free-to-play Steam game barely resembles the original incarnation which players can still indulge in if they pop in their PS3 or Xbox 360 copy of The Orange Box. A small dedicated community still plays the older version of the game sans microtransactions and cosmetic upgrades.

6 Wish Would Be Ported: Escape From Tarkov

This game is still in beta, so it will hopefully find a full console release once development grows. Escape From Tarkov is not a Battle Royale, but death takes away almost every item and resource players have collected, making the stakes extremely high. The main objective of any given mission is to escape the map by reaching a certain area before enemies, both players and computers, kill you.

5 Cannot Be Ported: Thief: The Dark Project

Thief was rebooted in 2014 to usher in the current generation, but it made little to no splash. It did not help when Dishonored did many of the things Thief did but better, making a reboot unnecessary. The series still has its place in first-person gaming history, which makes the original title’s PC exclusivity unfortunate. With the series completely dormant, it seems unlikely the debut title will ever see a console port.

4 Wish Would Be Ported: System Shock 2

While System Shock‘s control scheme makes a console version highly unlikely, the sequel more closely resembles modern FPS games. From Irrational Games, the studio which would go on to make BioShock and BioShock Infinite, the horror title includes more RPG elements and puzzles.

For fans of the aforementioned titles, System Shock 2 is a must-play. While no word of a port is murmuring, a sequel by Starbreeze Studios is currently in development.

3 Cannot Be Ported: Half-Life: Alyx

Valve does not make a Half-Life game unless it can push the medium forward by implementing new technology. Half-Life 2‘s source engine was a revolution with physics in games, while Half-Life: Alyx is generally seen as the best VR game of all time. Unfortunately, the powerful hardware needed to run it makes a home console version extremely unlikely, much like PS2 owners back in 2004 longing to play Half-Life 2 one day once consoles finally caught up to PCs.

2 Wish Would Be Ported: Half-Life: Black Mesa

This mod was in development since the release of Half-Life Source, and eventually became an officially endorsed remake of the original Half-Life. Since it is no longer a simple fan mod, the possibility of it coming to consoles is more likely than before. The original Half-Life is a classic that holds up today, and experiencing it with new visuals would be a treat for console owners just like it is for PC players.

1 Cannot Be Ported: No One Lives Forever 2

At least the first No One Lives Forever is available on PlayStation 2 and Xbox, but the sequel is a PC exclusive. Unfortunately, the series is stuck in rights limbo, preventing any sort of re-release despite the best efforts of teams who want to remaster it for modern platforms. With this in mind, it is highly unlikely to ever see a re-release of the game on modern PCs, let alone consoles.
