Halo Producer Talks Master Chief Collection Xbox Series X Upgrades

Halo Infinite may be delayed beyond the launch of the Xbox Series X and S consoles, but they will have plenty of Halo nevertheless. Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be supported on next-gen Xbox consoles via backward compatibility, and will be receiving its own Xbox Series X and S update from 343 Industries. The studio recently described changes being made for those interested in checking out the next-gen version of Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

In a Master Chief Collection development update shared this past Friday, 343 Industries senior producer Matt Hohl broke down the team’s plans. The update will, first and foremost, up the supported resolution for Halo: The Master Chief Collection to 4K on Xbox Series X and 1080p on Xbox Series S. Further, it’ll support 120fps on both consoles, so long as players have a monitor or television that facilitates it.

Resolution and frame rate are just the broader feature additions for Halo: The Master Chief Collection on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Hohl also says that other changes have been made, including increased draw distances within certain levels and improved split-screen in both the Campaign and Multiplayer. A Field of View slider has also been added to the game, allowing players to set the FOV to their own comfort level.

Lastly, as would be expected from a console touting a massively improved Solid-State Drive for its storage device, Halo: The Master Chief Collection is said to have improved loading times on Xbox Series X and S. Exactly how improved the loading times are compared to the Xbox One generation will have to be seen after the patch arrives, but hopefully they’re substantial.

As for when Halo fans will be able to experience the Xbox Series X improvements, they apparently won’t be finished in time for the next-gen consoles’ launch. Players won’t have to wait too long, though, as the tentative release date for the next-gen update is November 17. Halo fans will have to make due with another Xbox Series X launch title for the week before the Halo: The Master Chief Collection update arrives.

Another thing for potential Xbox Series X or S buyers to keep in mind is that Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be available as part of Xbox Game Pass. Regardless of whether Xbox Series X gamers pick up the title on its own or via Xbox Game Pass, the update will be free to download.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is available now on PC and Xbox One, with Xbox Series X/S support at launch.
