The PlayStation 5 is right around the corner, with less than two weeks away until it is in the hands of gamers. The console will of course have exciting new titles like Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but the console will also support almost every PS4 game via backwards compatibility. That goes for the hardware too, as Sony has confirmed that the DualShock 4 and PSVR will work on PS5. However, a new strange caveat has been revealed that players who are thinking of getting updated PS5 versions of games should consider.
Earlier this month, Sony confirmed another strange detail regarding using the PSVR on PS5. While the PS5 has its own new camera accessory for sale, that the new camera will not work with the PSVR. If someone wants to use the PSVR on the PS5 they will need to use the PS4 camera, along with an adapter piece that Sony is being kind off enough to offer for free. This lends to the theory held by many that the PS5 will eventually be getting some kind of PSVR 2, and that the new PS5 camera is designed to function with that.
Now it has been confirmed that games that will be receiving a new version on PS5, a la No Man’s Sky: Next Generation, will not function with the old PSVR. This also will apply to new games that will be supporting VR on other platforms like the upcoming Hitman 3.
What this seemingly means is that there will be no PS5 games with VR support anytime soon. This is certainly confusing, but the gist is that the only way to experience any kind of PSVR for the foreseeable future while using a PS5 is with all of the original PS4-era hardware and accessories for PSVR (and the free adapter Sony is giving out) while playing PS4 versions of games. If anyone is looking forward to what looks like an amazing experience for Hitman 3 in VR on PS5, they have to buy the PS4 version of the game.
Sony hasn’t clarified how this will work for digital titles that offer free upgrades. Perhaps some games could have two separate PS4 or PS5 modes to make things clear, but that does not seem to be the case. Until Sony makes any further announcements, it would be best for VR fans getting a PS5 in November to buy the PS4 versions of games and order the free adapter from Sony.
