This past week saw the release of Nvidia‘s third major 30-Series graphics card, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070. It, like the RTX 3080 and the 3090, sold out instantly. Demand for the 30-Series cards remains high and will likely be so for some time. However, if a new rumor is to be believed, Nvidia isn’t content to continue upping stock until demand has been met. It has more 30-Series models in the works and one of them, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, may launch surprisingly soon.
According to outlet TechPlusGame, early units of the 3060 Ti have already been shared with some organizations under strict embargo. This embargo is set to end as soon as November 17, just two weeks from now, which is when the 3060 Ti may supposedly launch. Nvidia ending embargoes as cards launch is a not an uncommon practice for the video card manufacturer. It’s not necessarily a popular decision, but it’s understandable as issues with cards that can be solved with new drivers may take time up to launch to fix.
To be clear, Nvidia has not officially announced the 3060 Ti graphics card, and has given no public indication that it will be making any further Nvidia card announcements soon. As such, this news is still considered a rumor without verification, but that said, TechPlusGame says that it’s “99% certain” that the information is accurate.
The report also provides some early information about the 3060 Ti’s specifications. It says the card will feature 3864 CUDA cores and 8GB of GDDR6 memory. The 3070 and 3080, by comparison, have 5,888 and 8,704 CUDA cores. The memory situation is less radical, with the 3070 also featuring 8GB and the 3080 featuring 10GB. The 3060 Ti also has less power draw with a TBP of 200w compared to the 3070’s 220w.
If there was a direct comparison to one of Nvidia’s 20 Series cards, the 3060 Ti would perhaps be somewhere between the 2080 and the 2080 Super. The 3070 is intended to be comparable to the 2080 Ti, though it’s been benchmarked as somewhat stronger. The 3080 and 3090 are both considered much more powerful Nvidia cards than anything in the 20 Series.
Suffice to say, the 3060 Ti is meaningfully less powerful than even the 3070, and as such it would not intended to be competitive in performance with Nvidia’s higher-end 30 Series cards; rather a more affordable alternative. Seeing as the 3070’s base retail price is $499, the 3060 Ti’s should be some degree lower. Whether that’s $400 or a bigger step downwards at $350 or even $300 remains to be seen. Nvidia has a lot of options, so it will be interesting to see whether it has more 30-Series cards left to release.
