At the beginning of a new Destiny 2 year, players prepare to venture into new destinations, experience new content, and collect some new gear. And occasionally, Bungie will mix things up by adding some new gameplay elements that go beyond just basic first-person shooting mechanics.
While the new stasis subclasses in Beyond Light look to be filling that role, a new discovery by a Destiny 2 player suggests there might be more mechanics in the works. The mechanic does have roots in current Destiny mechanics but it could also expand the gameplay in some interesting ways.
On the Destiny Raid Secrets subreddit, user CommanderTriss shared a video of a new mechanic that they discovered in-game. Basically, they found a new relic that players can throw around and that can potentially explode.
The Destiny 2 player says that they were testing functionality with Warmind Cells and discovered a new buff called “Incoming Relic” that would make the Cell follow them, but only within a 5m radius. The player could then pick up and throw the Warmind Cell, similar to many of the orbs/relics in Destiny 2.
While this could be a glitch of some sort, there is a lot more going on than just the average mechanic gone awry. Warmind Cells don’t have the ability to hover through the air and players can’t pick them up as if they are the Transmutation Spheres from the Ruinous Effigy exotic.
The only thing out of the ordinary that happened for CommanderTriss is that the servers went down briefly, so it could be that a mechanic planned for Destiny 2: Beyond Light accidentally activated for this player. But that still begs the question of whether this Incoming Relic mechanic is meant for a different object or if it will be for Warmind Cells. Year 3 mods that trigger and buff Warmind Cells are making their way into Beyond Light and Year 4, if only for a short period of time, so it is possible that Bungie is expanding how they work.
That being said, another theory is that this mechanic is intended for a different object that will be seen in the Beyond Light campaign or the upcoming Deep Stone Crypt raid. Bungie tends to use relic carriers as a key mechanic in its endgame activities and buffs usually help teach fireteams what to do in a given scenario. Perhaps “Incoming Relic” is meant to indicate that a key object is in an arena, like a boss encounter.
Whatever the case may be, the Destiny community is intrigued by the finding and curious to see if anything comes of it. Players should find out for themselves a little later this month.
Destiny 2: Beyond Light releases November 10, 2020.
