Saints Row 5 has been confirmed to be in development, the first new installment in the series since Gat Out of Hell was released back in 2015. The series is known for its comedic edge and its truly ridiculous plotlines that vary from fighting the devil to disarming nuclear bombs to becoming President of the United States and gaining superpowers. With that legacy, expectations for the upcoming title are very high.
There have been plenty of rumors about the development of Saints Row 5. With so much news and so little confirmed, fans will have to make their own minds up when it comes to what they believe, at least until Volition releases more official details. Here’s every rumor so far about what fans may be able to expect in Saints Row 5.
One major rumor is that Saints Row 5 will be something of a soft reboot for the series, with some big implications. First, the game is said to take place after the events of Saints Row: The Third, with the Saints having become a soulless megacorporation after the death of Johnny Gat with the former player character – the Boss – at its helm.
In order to accommodate this, the events of Saints Row 4 and Gat Out of Hell will supposedly be retconned as events which took place in a Saints Row TV show developed by this new corporate iteration of the gang. The player will no longer play as the Boss of the Saints, but as a new up-and-comer trying to take them down.
Past games gave players a huge amount of customization options when creating The Boss in Saints Row, which covered everything from voice to size of genitalia. As a result, it is rumored that the Boss’s face and voice will be disguised during the events of Saints Row 5 in order to avoid the villain conflicting with the appearance of the Boss in player saves of Saints Row: The Third.
This theory was first leaked by ResetEra member vestan, and claims that the tone of the game will find a new middle ground between the extreme wackiness that took over the franchise from Saints Row: The Third and earlier installments in the series which had a more serious and character-focused tone.
The Saints Row games’ publisher Deep Silver is owned by THQ Nordic, which has announced that at least 2 triple-A games are set for release before March 2021. Naturally this has led many fans of Saints Row to speculate that Saints Row 5 could be among those planned releases, though this has yet to be confirmed by Volition.
It is also rumored that the story of Saints Row 5 will involve teaming other with other, smaller gangs like the Wolf Pack to take down the old Saints. As in previous games, Saints Row 5 is said to have an immense amount of character customization, as well as plenty of new ways to customize weapons and playstyles. The game is already said to be in deep development, with some even suggesting that it’s already playable in an early form at Volition.
For now, however, fans will have to wait for confirmation by Volition. If these rumors are true, however, Saints Row 5 could mark a risky departure from the series’ previous escalation of its intensely irreverent brand. Whether or not the gamble is being made, let alone whether or not it could pay off, remains to be seen.
Saints Row 5 is in development.
