Final Fantasy 7: 5 Fan Theories That Make Sense (& 5 That Don’t)

When it comes to fan communities, Final Fantasy might be one of the richest. That being said because these games are so engrossed with their stories, there is plenty left on the cutting room table for discussion. Did this character think that, or what happened to them? What’s with the ending?

Questions like that can stretch on for ages. Final Fantasy VII then may have some of the most fan theories out there. One of them had fans thinking it and Final Fantasy X were related which was eventually confirmed in an interview. So, among the big theories out there, what makes sense to be hopefully confirmed next and what doesn’t?

10 Does: Knights Of The Round Were Cetra

This is a combo theory. Some believe that because Knights Of The Round are human like in shape, although giant, they are lost Cetra. More so than that they are the ones that defeated Jenova when it first crashed into the planet. To ensure future generations would be safe they were crystallized into the Lifestream in order to become Materia.

9 Doesn’t: The Cloud Of Darkness Is Jenova

The Cloud of Darkness is the name of the main villain from the real Final Fantasy III. Theories base this one on looks as it too is a female like alien entity with tentacles. That’s about where the evidence stops. Another ridiculous theory poses that Jenova and Lavos from Chrono Trigger are part of the same species. This is the same company but that’s where the similarities should start and end.

8 Does: The Bad Ending For Two Decades

Many believed that the final shot of Final Fantasy VII‘s ending Red XIII and his kin looking at Midgar overgrown 500 years in the future was a happy ending. However, now that remake is out, some now believe this was the bad ending all along. The film, Advent Children, also takes place in this dark timeline and fans think the remake is going to fix all of this. This also has fans feeling that Aerith was not meant to die and that there was another way which would then lead to the better ending.

7 Doesn’t: The Next Part To The Remake Will Star Zack

Speaking of Final Fantasy VII’s remake, based on clues from Square Enix hinting another part may be out sooner than expected, it is theorized that Zack will be the star. Think about it. Square Enix already has the assets for Midgar so why waste them? That is to say they could churn out a quick sequel starring Zack. While this is possible it seems unlikely even if there may be precedent for it like how Square Enix reused assets to make quick sequels for Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XIII

6 Does: Sephiroth Is From Another Universe

It is theorized that the Sephiroth that appears in final Fantasy VII’s remake is not the Sephiroth from that universe. He is from the future as he knows more than is letting on. That is to say he seems to know about the events of the original game so he could have used the Lifestream to somehow reappear after his defeat in the film. What he wants is unknown though.

5 Doesn’t: Sephiroth Mind Control

There is a popular theory out there that everything Cloud does he does at the whim of Sephiroth. Cloud does have fits of mind rage and he even almost kills Aerith.

That’s just it though. He almost kills her. It would be safe to assume that Sephiroth indeed tries to control him in the original game but fails to make this theory defunct.

4 Does: Aerith Protected Tifa In The Lifestream

Anyone that touches or goes near Mako for prolonged periods is said to have side effects. Going near the Lifestream might also effect one’s health. So how is it that Tifa was able to seemingly go inside Cloud’s mind in the Lifestream and survive? It sort of makes sense Cloud can survive as he has been experimented on, but what about Tifa? Some fans think Aerith helped protect her which makes as much sense as anything in this part of Final Fantasy VII

3 Doesn’t: Aerith Knows

Along with Sephiroth, some fans believe that Aerith knows about the events in the original game as well. They do not think she is from another universe or timeline though. It’s more like the Lifestream spoke to her and helped her see a vision of things to come.

While it is plausible since she does have a connection with the planet, it doesn’t make sense why Aerith wouldn’t straight up tell everyone. Who knows? Maybe she will in the future games proving this theory right.

2 Does: The Party Travels To A New Universe

At the end of the remake the party steps through a vortex to fight Sephiroth and they then reappear in Midgar. However, some believe that they step out of their world and into another version of Final Fantasy VII. One where things are really going to be remixed. When will it be revealed? When they go to Gold Saucer and watch Jessie in a play only she doesn’t recall ever meeting them. Now that would be a twist ending to part two.

1 Doesn’t: Vincent Is Worthy Of Masamune

If one hacks into Final Fantasy VII, specifically the original PC version, they can remove Masamune from Sephiroth. Unfortunately no one can equip it. No one except for Vincent. Why him of all people. Was he supposed to wield it in the game through some cut story? Is he related to Sephiroth? While fun to think about, this is probably some coding error. Maybe their models just coincidentally share the similar code to save time.
