Pokemon GO Needs Its Own Version of the Crown Tundra | Game Rant

Pokemon GO has steadily been going forward with updates introducing more Pokemon from the mainline games, which includes the large variety of legendary Pokemon that players have encountered over the decades. Catching all the legendary Pokemon, however, can be a bit tricky for many players.

When playing Pokemon GO, the majority of legendary Pokemon can only be found in raids that are only around for a limited amount of time, and this means that players will need to pay attention to what legendary Pokemon are active in raids at their current date. They additionally follow no sort of pattern, with few exceptions like Giratina around Halloween, meaning that players need to follow updates online.

Meanwhile, in the mainline Pokemon titles, Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield players have access to the newly released Crown Tundra DLC expansion. Accessing this new area gives players most legendary Pokemon that have appeared in past Pokemon games, and it could be possible for this sort of feature to come to players in Pokemon GO as well.

As players go through the Crown Tundra DLC, they will discover the various legendary Pokemon roaming the Crown Tundra. Some of these Pokemon need to be found in Max Lair raids while others need to be found in other locations in the new DLC areas.

Despite each legendary Pokemon requiring different steps in order to acquire them, they are available for players to catch in some capacity or another. None are limited to events or real world times. The only exceptions are the mythical Pokemon, which are not technically classified as legendary Pokemon. Because of this, the majority of them are not available in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield even with the DLC expansions.

There is no doubt that Pokemon GO functions very differently from mainline Pokemon titles. With the world map directly being a map of the real world and players being unable to fight the majority of wild Pokemon, it is a very different type of game. However, it could be possible still for players to have some kind of similar place to the Crown Tundra in order to consistently get legendary Pokemon. Of course, there likely wouldn’t be a real world place that players would need to travel to that is filled with legendary Pokemon. Not only would that be impractical and likely expensive for the majority of Pokemon GO players, it would be very unrealistic especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

There are already multiple aspects of Pokemon GO that can be purchased with Pokecoins, which can either be earned in-game or directly bought with real world currency. There are also various event passes that require the payment of real world currency. Because of this, it wouldn’t be unheard of for players to be able to purchase a special pass to go to a virtual Crown Tundra.

In an ideal scenario, if players were to purchase a pass to a virtual Crown Tundra, they would be able to take their player avatar and a select number of Pokemon to the location in-game. While there, players may either be there for a limited amount of time, stay there until they catch a legendary Pokemon, or stay until their party of Pokemon is wiped out. Which it would be would have to be tested out by Niantic, but there is still a lot of potential.

While in the Crown Tundra, players would be able to participate in raids against legendary Pokemon alongside other players no matter the distance between them. The Pokemon available would likely not be the same legendary Pokemon that players could currently find in raids in the main game. Considering how many of the legendary Pokemon in Pokemon GO are considered to be top tier in PVP league battles, this pass would allow players who were unable to fight raids alongside other players nearby to finally get the Pokemon they were missing out on.

With how a pass to the Crown Tundra would likely be behind a paywall of either Pokecoins or real money, some players may argue that its inclusion would turn Pokemon GO into a pay-to-win game. As mentioned before, many legendary Pokemon are considered to be very high tier for competitive Pokemon GO players. If players could keep catching legendary Pokemon by going back to the Crown Tundra over and over again, many players would definitely have an issue with that.

What some players may not realize, however, is that players who sink money into Pokemon GO already do have an advantage. This is due to being able to purchase multiple raid passes as well as being able to travel easier via car to various locations for more raid opportunities. However, the addition of the Crown Tundra pass might allow players who can’t have as much mobility when playing get the opportunity to have stronger Pokemon as well. Niantic could also make ways for more players to get into Crown Tundra for free, or otherwise somehow limit their ability to appear in battles. Overall, it doesn’t seem like a concern many should worry about.

With all of these ideas being thrown around, the question still remains: Will players ever be able to travel to the Crown Tundra in Pokemon GO? Unfortunately, it is very unlikely for a new virtual location to be added to Pokemon GO. The game very much focuses on the augmented reality portions of gameplay, so a completely virtual area wouldn’t likely come to fruition in-game, especially a location already existing in a mainline Pokemon title.

However, it is still very possible for Niantic to implement easier ways of collecting all of the legendary Pokemon available in Pokemon GO outside of raids and events. How the game developer would do this is a mystery, but the future for Pokemon GO is still wide open. With the sixth generation of Pokemon on the horizon in Pokemon GO as well as the end of the year 2020, there is a lot of things that will likely happen in the game’s future updates. This will, of course, include new legendary Pokemon and new features for all players to enjoy down the line.

Pokemon GO is available now in select regions on Android and iOS devices.
