Willy’s Wonderland Trailer Has Strong Five Nights at Freddy’s Energy

This film is the kind of concept that pretty much sells itself: Nicolas Cage going toe-to-toe with demonic animatronics in a Five Nights at Freddy’s style horror setting. It’s good that the film is so easy to explain, because this latest teaser doesn’t give much away in terms of plot or setting, and opts to mostly confirm that yup, this movie is exactly what it looks like. Regardless, for those who’re looking for something cheesy and spooky to watch in the coming year, it’s worth a look at least.

For those out of the loop, Willy’s Wonderland is a horror film set to star Nicolas Cage  as a quiet drifter who ends up agreeing to work the night shift at the abandoned “Willy’s Wonderland.” Unfortunately for him, when he starts the shift, the locations eight animatronic characters come to life with murderous intent. It’s up to Cage and a group of wayward teens to fight for survival and find a way to survive until the sun rises.

If that strikes anyone as a little familiar, it’s probably because it’s almost a beat for beat match of Five Nights at Freddy’s: a series of popular games featuring the same basic concept of a night guard surviving killer animatronics. While there isn’t any word on whether the film has been directly based on the series, it’s probably a safe bet to say there’s some inspiration there. Funnily enough, Five Nights at Freddy’s is also getting a movie in the near future, though this film should be a good appetizer for anyone looking to pass the time until that releases.

The Willy’s Wonderland teaser is a pretty fun, 15 second series of clips to set the mood. Anyone who tunes in will see Nic Cage investigating a creepy abandoned building, teens making out, a man prowling the facilities with a shotgun, and of course a huge, creepy animatronic beast in the form of Willy himself. A blood spattered birthday cake that appears near the end is the perfect image to set the tone for this project, which should be a pretty fun, creepy romp when it hits theaters sometime next year.

Willy’s Wonderland is expected to drop in 2021.
