Each new month brings something brand new to Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Finally, with the month of November, players in the Northern Hemisphere can begin collecting mushrooms to make the adorable mushroom DIY furniture and complete those cottagecore islands.
Much like the way flowers work in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, there is a distinct method to how mushrooms can grow around the island, although they do not breed together to form new, rare types. And keep in mind that mushrooms cannot be collected by spending Nook Miles on mystery island tours and they must be found on player-owned islands.
Mushrooms will only appear in Animal Crossing: New Horizons throughout the month of November for Northern Hemisphere folks (and throughout the month of May for Southern Hemisphere players), so at 5AM on December 1st, players will no longer be able to collect mushrooms for craftable DIYs or selling. Of course, this means players can use time traveling methods to continue harvesting the resource if they so desire.
Mushrooms will spawn around both types of regular trees in Animal Crossing—Oak and Cedar—but keep in mind these trees cannot be bearing fruit, money, or anything else. This also means that bamboo and coconut trees will not spawn mushrooms, so it might be necessary for the player to plant several Cedar or Oak trees if they wish to get the maximum amount of mushrooms per day. Stumps of these tree types work as well.
Up to five mushrooms spawn per day at different rates of rarity. There are five different types of mushrooms in New Horizons: round, skinny, and flat mushrooms, which are the most common players will find, and elegant and rare mushrooms, which are very rare and sell for 10,000 and 16,000 Bells, respectively. Rare mushrooms are also interesting because they can be found buried in the ground near trees, marked by the same star-shaped spot as fossils.
Some Animal Crossing players say that the higher the star rating for the island, the more mushrooms that will spawn, though this hasn’t been confirmed by the community. But to spawn as many mushrooms as possible per day, the player will want to have many Cedar and Oak trees already fully grown; two rows of four to five should work well if the player wants to collect mushrooms efficiently.
If the player wishes to get more than the normal five-per-day pull, they’ll need to use time travel methods. Up to thirty mushrooms can spawn on one player island at a time, but the player can’t simply skip ahead six days and gather thirty precious mushrooms; it looks like they’ll need to listen to Isabelle’s island-wide broadcast each day or more mushrooms will not appear. Make sure to skip one day at a time, listen to the broadcast, save, rinse, and repeat until the full 30 mushrooms have sprouted.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now for the Nintendo Switch.
