The many villagers of Animal Crossing: New Horizons are undeniably cute, but seeing the colorful cast of characters appear in an NFL game of all places seems like an odd occurrence. On Sunday, however, that is exactly what happened, making it clear that someone on the Detroit Lions staff is a big Animal Crossing fan.
While one might expect an advertisement for Madden NFL 21’s next gen release dates to be seen in the stands, animated Animal Crossing cutouts are as unexpected as one can get for a game of football. With the NFL forced to use cutouts and moving images to simulate a live crowd because of the coronavirus, some clever cameos have been snuck into the stands. None have been as cute as this latest stand setup, though, as the Animal Crossing villagers watching the game are genuinely adorable.
A clip of the crowd was quickly posted on social media, as a Twitter user by the name of Dali Dimovski captured some video footage of the crowd. While most of the villagers in the stands are human, a few of the game’s sought-after animal companions can be seen as well. While there is no love shown for the fan favorite Jock villagers like Roald, the geeky duck Derwin can be seen watching the Lions game. Lionel can also be seen keeping an eye on the NFL action as well.
Within the clip, the newlywed NPC Cyrus can be seen winding down after his in-game New Horizons event. Another NPC, the knowledgeable museum owner Blathers, can be seen in the stands sporting his usual wide-eyed look. While it is undoubtedly nice to see the owl cheering on the teams, Blathers would likely be getting told to keep quiet by the other members of the audience. After all, there are only so many football facts the other fans would be able to tolerate.
While this crossover is incredibly odd, it is equally entertaining and further proof that Animal Crossing villagers can do surprising things when they’re not walking in circles around the island. Fans could not get enough of the clip, with one user named Mr. Macoy asking for the NFL’s music to be replaced with the much-memed Wii Sports music. Twitter user J4DEWEST delivered on the request, and the combination of AC villagers and the classic track is genuinely hilarious.
While it is unclear if the NFL will feature the Animal Crossing villagers in any other games, the moment should stick with football players and New Horizons fans for some time to come. Fans will likely keep working on unique Animal Crossing crossovers of their own, too, ensuring that the adorable villagers are seen just about everywhere.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
