FIFA 21: The 10 Best Player Cards In Ultimate Team, Ranked

After a short delay, FIFA 21 has finally arrived and with it, the latest iteration of the Ultimate Team game mode. It’s one of the most comprehensive versions yet, with new mechanics and features sprinkled throughout. Building a team to take on the world has never been so enjoyable, but, as always, it can also be quite challenging.

For those looking to build the perfect team, finding the right balance between highly-rated players and team chemistry isn’t always easy. In previous years, the joy of packing a top player was often followed by the disappointing realization that they just don’t fit into the team. Thankfully though, there are plenty of 85+ rated players to choose from in this year’s FIFA, allowing for some great team builds. These are the very best that the game has to offer.

10 Sergio Ramos (89)

That Sergio Ramos’ rating at the age of 34 is higher than it was when he was in his late 20’s says a lot about his performances over the last few seasons. The 2019-2020 was arguably his best ever, with the Real Madrid captain scoring 11 league goals as Real recaptured the La Liga title.

There are strikers who’d be happy with that kind of return, so for a center back to reach double digits is really quite impressive – even if some of those goals came from the penalty spot. Ramos might not be the best defender in the game anymore, but he’s not too far behind.

9 Virgil Van Dijk (90)

Virgil Van Dijk played an integral role when it came to Liverpool winning their first ever Premier League title. It’s an achievement that means everything to the club and its fans and one that likely wouldn’t have been possible were it not for the Dutchman. He was an absolute rock last season and his rating in this year’s FIFA fully reflects that.

His 90 rating makes him the best defender in the game and it could certainly be argued that he deserved an increase to 91 based on his stellar season. The injury he picked up recently against Everton is a huge blow for his side and one that could have huge repercussions when it comes to Liverpool’s attempt to retain the Premier League trophy.

8 Kylian Mbappé (90)

Mbappé’s meteoric rise to stardom over the past few seasons is really quite something. Just four years ago he had a 71 rating and is now one of the best players in the game. He’s the cover star for FIFA 21 and is quite probably the most valuable player in the world. What makes this all the more impressive is that the young Frenchman is still only 21 years of age.

His 90 rating marks another small increase over last year’s FIFA and his 96 pace rating makes him the fastest of all of the top players in the game. He’ll be a strong contender for most peoples’ teams, although playing in the French league could cause some chemistry issues for those without a core of French players in their side.

7 Mohamed Salah (90)

It was another great season in front of goal for the mercurial Egyptian and he’s started the new season well too. Salah has managed 100 goals in just 161 appearances since joining Liverpool in 2017, making him the 3rd fastest player in the club’s history to do so.

Salah rightfully holds onto his 90 rating thanks in large to his individual and club successes last season. He’s quick, he can dribble and he is a deadly finisher to boot. All things considered, he is a great pick for anybody looking to build a Premier League 11 in Ultimate team.

6 Sadio Mané (90)

Mané is one of the many Liverpool players to feature in the game’s top ten players — and for good reason. It had been 30 years since Liverpool last managed to win England’s top honor and Mané played a huge part in that success. He was the clubs second highest goal scorer last season, with many of his goals coming in tight victories.

It could be argued that his 88 rating in last year’s FIFA was a little harsh, but there’s no denying that he fully deserves this year’s rating. He’s been a revelation since joining Liverpool from Southampton back in 2016 and is a great shout for a BPL team thanks to his raw pace and expert finishing.

5 Robert Lewandowski (91)

Robert Lewandowski will likely be incredibly disappointed that this year’s Ballon d’Or was cancelled, as the award would no doubt have gone to him. Last season was the striker’s most productive ever in front of goal, with the Pole netting 34 league goals and 55 in all competitions.

Lewandowski recently turned 32, which is around the age that players’ ratings start to drop off, but his increase of 2 is fully deserved. He may be entering the twilight years of his career, but he shows no signs of slowing down and has already scored 10 goals in the opening five Bundesliga fixtures this season.

4 Kevin De Bruyne (91)

There’s no denying that De Bruyne is one of the most technically gifted midfielders in the world, but his injury record is a little concerning. Since signing for Manchester City in 2015, he has been forced to sit out 49 matches on the sidelines and has already missed a few this season as well.

The 2019-2020 season was actually one of De Bruyne’s best when it came to remaining fit. He missed only two matches through injury and, as a result, was able to post some incredibly impressive numbers. As well as scoring 13 league goals, he was able to match Thiery Henry’s record of 20 assists in a season.

3 Neymar (91)

By his own high standards, the Brazilian had a fairly underwhelming season in Paris. He failed to make it past the 20 goals marker for the first time since the 2013-2014 season and just the fourth time in his 12 seasons as a pro. Combined with the heartache of finishing on the losing side in last season’s Champions League final, and last season is likely one that Neymar will be keen to forget.

This poor season means that his rating drops by one, but he’s still tied for the title of third best player in the game. His pace and dribbling stats are both in the 90’s and his finishing isn’t too bad either. He remains a great option for anybody looking to build a team of players from the French league and will undoubtedly score plenty of goals for those that include him.

2 Cristiano Ronaldo (92)

That Ronaldo still holds a 92 rating at the age of 35 is a testament to how much work he puts in to remaining healthy. Although his pace isn’t what it once was, he’s still deadly in front of goal and managed to put away 31 goals in just 33 league appearances last season. He’s also managed 16 in his last 12 games for Portugal, suggesting he still has a lot left to give for both club and country.

Ronaldo should perhaps feel a little hard done by that his rating has dropped to 92. Like age though, a rating is just a number and Ronaldo’s still an incredible player in the latest iteration of FIFA. There aren’t too many options when it comes to building a team from Serie A, but in this case, it’s probably worth taking the chemistry hit to include him.

1 Lionel Messi (93)

The upcoming season will almost certainly be Messi’s last in a Barcelona shirt, but had the Argentine had it his way he would have been gone already. Last season was a disappointing one for Messi, both in terms of his personal performances and his side’s lack of success on the pitch. They were demolished by Bayern in the Champions League and missed out on retaining La Liga thanks to some poor post-restart form.

That Messi somehow holds a 93 rating in FIFA 21 is beyond belief. It’s the same rating that he was given in FIFA 18 after banging in 54 goals in 52 domestic appearances the previous season. EA’s loyalty to Messi may not please Ronaldo, but it’s great news for anybody looking for a left-footed forward who plays in La Liga. Those who can afford him would be foolish to forgo him.
