The PlayStation 5 releases in one week on November 12th and fans are preparing for the exciting unboxing of the new console. When fans first open the PlayStation 5 box, they will find an extremely handy accessory. Along with the console, DualSense controller, and a power cable, players will also find a 2.1 HDMI cable.
Although it does not appear much different than the HDMI 2.0 cable included with the PS4 Pro, the HDMI 2.1 cable is capable of supporting 4K resolution at 120Hz. This means that the PlayStation 5 will be able to run any supported game at 120 frames-per-second right out of the box. With the HDMI 2.1 cable included, players will not have to buy and upgrade the cable to play at the highest capabilities. However, more than the HDMI 2.1 is required to play a PS5 game at 120 FPS.
The display and PS5 game also play a part in running at 120 FPS. Players must have a TV or display that can run 120Hz and must have a title that supports it as well. Many newer TVs and displays support 120Hz, however, they must also support a data bandwidth of 48 Gbps to experience true 12o FPS gameplay.
Even if the display does not check every requirement, the games will still run well and look extremely smooth A few of the launch titles including Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition and Dirt 5 support 120 FPS, so players will get to experience the highest resolution and FPS as soon as the PS5 releases.
The other titles that will support 120 FPS are Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege, and Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. Running on 120 FPS will make both first-person shooters look and feel extremely realistic. Rainbow Six: Siege released over five years ago, so it will be interesting to see the change in quality by utilizing the PS5’s HDMI 2.1. Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom is a very bright and colorful side-scrolling adventure game, so the graphic and frame rate improvements should be most apparent in the detailed backgrounds and characters.
The Xbox Series X also comes with the HDMI 2.1 cable. While both consoles will be capable of running any game at 120 FPS, the Xbox Series X has a larger list of games that will support it. Xbox Series X has a few exclusive launch titles that will support 4K running on 120 FPS, including Gears 5 and Ori and the Will of the Wisps. Look out for more titles announcing 120 FPS support after the Xbox Series X and PS5 releases.
The PS5 releases November 12.
