Fallout: 10 Things You Never Knew About Power Armor | Game Rant

Power Armor is seen as the pinnacle weapon and armor in the Fallout series. Once the player obtains their own set of Power Armor, they effectively become a death-dealing juggernaut that’s hard to put down.

While a lot has been revealed about Power Armor and its long history in the games, there is a lot the average gamer might not be aware of. Whether it’s the origins of this ferocious weapon or the lore-friendly mechanics, here are some things many players probably don’t know about.

10 Was Invented Due To Combat Vehicle Shortage

The incentive behind inventing Power Armor was due to a shortage of vehicles in the US military. This was largely due to a resource crisis the United States was experiencing that caused a decline in the production and deployment of combat vehicles like tanks and jeeps.

Power Armor used fewer resources to produce and could be deployed in larger quantities much more easily. The nuclear-based energy of the Power Armor also freed up crude oil for other efforts.

9 Used To Run On Small Energy Cells

Interestingly, the initial designs of the Power Armor used Small Energy Cells to power the device. These Energy Cells depleted very rapidly when used and at the time were expensive to produce.

To offset the absurd costs and logistical nightmare of constantly replenishing the Energy Cells, a Fusion Core was developed. This crude Nuclear Device was integrated into the suit of armor and later iterations were capable of powering a suit of Power Armor for 100 years.

8 Were Responsible For US Dominating In The Sino-American War

Once the T-45 was produced and rolled out, it very quickly shifted the balance of power during the Sino-American War. US soldiers in Power Armor were able to very quickly and efficiently eliminate the Chinese forces.

Even though the Chinese had superior and more numerous tanks, the Power Armor was much more mobile and capable of handling anti-tank weaponry. As more and more suits were produced, it was apparent the Chinese were quickly losing the war.

7 China Invented The Stealth Power Armor

In response to the US wave of Power Armor, the Chinese set about inventing their own suit of armor. For whatever reason, they opted to develop suits that were meant for stealth rather than straight forward combat.

The Hēi Guǐ, or Black Ghost Stealth Armor, was the initial prototype released by China. It was smaller, lighter, and meant to render the wearer nearly invisible. Before mass production could begin, the US obtained some of the units and reverse engineered them in their Anchorage facilities.

6 It Took 45 Iterations To Get Right

An interesting concept many players overlook is the fact that the first full use suit of Power Armor was the T-45. This means the 45th iteration was the first capable enough to be mass-produced and used in combat scenarios.

This means there were 44 models produced that were never deployed or used in any fashion, likely due to flaws or limitations in the design. The game’s lore makes no mention of these earlier models and no evidence of them or their schematics exists anywhere.

5 The Most Advanced Models Were Meant For The Secret Service

While Power Armor was designed for soldiers on the frontlines of the Sino-American war, they were quickly commissioned for the defense of the US president. In fact, the most advanced models invented prior to the bombs falling were for this purpose.

The T-65 and X-01 are these suits of armor. The T-65 existed on paper but was never produced prior to the bombs. The X-01, which was a departure from the more traditional T-series, did see a few suits produced prior to the bombs.

4 The Enclave Hellfire Armor Is The Most Advanced

According to the lore of the games, the most advanced Power Armor is the Hellfire. Developed by the Enclave in Fallout 76, this suit of armor is a combination of pre-War and post-War research.

The lion’s share of the pre-War research was done at Adams Air Force Base and was on track to being one of the most mass-produced suits in the military. Once the Enclave discovered the research, they expanded upon it and began producing these advanced suits as quickly as possible.

3 The T-45 Was Meant To Be Temporary

Interestingly, the T-45 was only meant to be a temporary line of Power Armor. It was the first released design, had some defects and flaws, and as soon as it was released, scientists set about designing replacements.

Ultimately, the T-45 proved surprisingly effective and durable in combat, leading teams to create upgrades to overcome its flaws. The T-45 ended up becoming a staple of the US military and continued mass production long after superior designs were invented.

2 Designed With Anti-Theft If The Wearer Dies

One of the features implemented in Power Armor was an anti-theft measure. If the wearer dies for any reason, the Power Armor will lock up and become inaccessible. This is a feature that was seen in Fallout 4 when an enemy wearing one would die.

This was done by the US military to prevent Chinese soldiers from accessing and using the Power Armor. It likely also hindered efforts to reverse engineer the items as the entire thing would have to be hauled away at a dead weight. It also incentivized the engineers to make them as durable as possible so they wouldn’t have to replace the ones that were destroyed in combat.

1 Only Two Factions Can Build New Ones

While Power Armor appears throughout the Fallout series and multiple factions have their own custom pieces, only two manufacture new ones. The Brotherhood of Steel and Enclave both have the means to produce new Power Armor.

While the Brotherhood of Steel has manufacturing capabilities, it is likely they place a high priority on obtaining ones already built. The Enclave, on the other hand, is constantly tweaking and enhancing the design to gain an edge on other factions.
