It’s almost time for the big launch of the next-gen consoles. Both the Xbox line and PS5 will be at Best Buy on Black Friday, so players should think carefully on what to buy before becoming embroiled in Black Friday chaos.
For many, the decision has already been made, and it’s a surprising one: the Xbox Series S. Not only is it far cheaper than the Xbox Series X (almost half the price), the revealed specs indicate it’s faster than the PS5. Sounds like a done deal. However, an earlier leak pointed to something that could prove disastrous: a small storage space for games. Now, thanks to one Redditor who got the console a week early, it looks like that size may be even smaller than previously thought.
The early reveal of the Xbox Series S’s storage space indicated it would have 512 GB of space. Considering the games that many players will want for the console, that’s not a lot. At that storage level, Call of Duty: Warzone would take up half the Xbox Series S’ storage. However, a Redditor going by Spead20 seems to have received their Xbox Series S a week early. According to them, the Series S has only 364 GB available for games and apps.
This could prove problematic if it’s true. The 512 GB compromise was one that players were always going to make reluctantly for fast speed and a low price. However, if the amount is even lower than that, it could cause real problems. The file size of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a massive 250 GB, which means it would take up more than half the Series S’ storage capacity. This means that if these figures are right, unless an add on is released for the Series S, players could not have both Call of Duty games installed at once.
This problem is mostly centered around triple-A titles, but it’s one that will get bigger as the years go by. Obviously not every game will be so huge, but many games grow in size over time. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare‘s Season 6 file size alone was well over 100GB, and it probably won’t be the last update for the game.
At this point it’s obvious that the Xbox Series S is not the ideal console for Call of Duty fans, even if it has the larger of the two listed storage spaces. Of course, some file sizes might be smaller between consoles. Spider-Man: Miles Morales has a smaller size on the PS5, so maybe some games can compress for the Series S as well. Only time will tell.
