Adam Sandler’s Hubie Halloween Is Netflix’s Most Popular Movie of 2020

It’s a pretty good time to be Adam Sandler. Well, it’s always a pretty good time to be a famous movie star, but Sandler has had quite a run of success recently, particularly on Netflix. After originally signing a deal to produce six movies, the most publicized being The Ridiculous Six, his films performed well enough to convince Netflix to pay $250 million for four more films on top of that. It’s an investment that has paid off in spades, as his most recent original, Hubie Halloween, is reportedly the most popular Netflix original film in all of 2020.

That’s no small feat, especially considering the competition. The film, which stars Adam Sandler as a goofball protagonist attempting to defend the town of Salem from evil spirits, has outperformed films like American Murder: The Family Next Door, and Enola Holmes, both of which did pretty well themselves. Despite the other popular projects Netflix has available, the film debuted to a number one spot, which it managed to hold for over a week. The popular reception, as well as favorable responses from critics, seems to prove that Sandler’s still got the magic, and isn’t going away any time soon.

This is a keen reminder for Netflix that it’s as much a studio as a platform now. As shows like Schitt’s Creek took lower positions in the top ten compared to Netflix originals, it was yet another sign that the company needs to remain proactive in scouting and developing new original projects. Whether or not that comes in the form of picking up already developed projects or forming studios that can build originals from the ground up, it seems that streaming services may be moving further and further away from relying on third party content.

This is especially true as more and more companies being announcing and expanding their own streaming platforms. Though the failure of Quibi proves that not just anyone can succeed in streaming, there are more than enough big companies with a lot of money invested in the ecosystem to make exclusivity the wave of the future for streaming. Perhaps in the future Netflix will look less like a collection of popular shows, and more like a publishing platform where you can access all of their original content in one place.
