The Star Wars Holiday Special broadcast back in 1978 was a dark moment for George Lucas’s space opera franchise and hated by pretty much everyone who saw it. However, the upcoming LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special looks set to erase that awful memory once and for all.
The special, coming to Disney+ in December, will reunite Rey and BB-8 with Finn and Poe in an adventure that sees her travel back to a long, long time ago when Luke was still learning the ways of the Force. The trailer even winks at The Mandolorian with a glimpse of the adorable Baby Yoda in animated Lego form.
In an interview with StarWars.com, Lucasfilm vice president James Waugh and animation producer Josh Rimes gave some insight into the decisions behind this new production. “We found ourselves talking about holiday specials. When looking at what to do next with LEGO Star Wars, it kind of went from there.” said Waugh.
Citing much loved holiday specials like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as inspiration, Waugh continued “the reason those holiday stories are timeless is because there are lessons. They are trying to warm you with a theme about being with your family, caring, loving others, being selfless. We really wanted to anchor this with the idea of, ‘What is Rey missing right now?'” “She has a nice It’s a Wonderful Life moment,” adds Rimes.
Joining the voice cast for this special are Billy Dee Williams, Kelly Marie Tran and Anthony Daniels who will be reprising their roles as Lando Calrissian, Rose Tico and C-3PO respectively. And animated Star Wars veterans James Arnold-Taylor, Tom Kane and Matt Lanter will lend their voices to some of the classic characters. Sadly, there’s no confirmation if Ackmena, played by the late great Bea Arthur, will be back for this new Holiday Special.
LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special will be available to stream on Disney+ on Dec 17.
