The flow of new graphics hardware into the PC market does not look like it’s stopping any time soon. Following the unveiling and release of Nvidia’s first Ampere powered graphics cards, the company appears to be getting ready to fill out the more budget conscious end of the range. The latest leaks detail two mid-range RTX 3000 Series cards that are expected to launch in early 2021.
The leak comes from well-known source Kopite7kimi, and details the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 and RTX 3050 Ti graphics cards, both of which are reported to use the GA106 Ampere GPU. The GA106 is a smaller and cheaper GPU compared to the GA102 used in the RTX 3090 and RTX 3080, and reportedly in the upcoming RTX 3070 Ti, as well as the GA104 used in the RTX 3070 and likely the upcoming RTX 3060 Ti.
The RTX 3060 will reportedly have 3840 CUDA cores, and the RTX 3050 Ti will have 3584, compared to 5888 in the $499 RTX 3070. Prices have not been announced, but are likely to be below $399, the price point rumored for the RTX 3060 Ti. Reports suggest that the cards will also come with 6 GB of GDDR6 memory, sufficient for strong 1080p and 1440p gaming, but limiting for 4K.
Kopite7kimi also recently leaked details of the specifications for the upcoming RTX 3080 Ti, which has reportedly been significantly boosted along with the RTX 3070 Ti, following AMD’s impressive RX 6000 Series reveal. The flurry of new hardware means that Nvidia will have a strong line-up of cards covering the high and mid-tier gaming market, though it will remain to be seen which cards offer better performance value than the AMD equivalents. Unless it can increase successful production of GPUs though, Nvidia may have to limit or end production of some cards to meet demand for the rest of the range, though it will want to avoid this unless necessary.
With strong competition in the high-end graphics market, Nvidia is probably looking to get its mid-tier Ampere cards out as soon as possible, particularly if AMD has achieved consistent performance increases with its own mid-tier cards, the RX 6600, RX 6600 XT, and RX 6700. The big question remains whether Nvidia will be able to produce enough stock to satisfy market demand, something it has struggled massively with since launching the RTX 3000 Series.
All of which means the launch of the budget performance RTX 3060 and RTX 3050 Ti are likely to be delayed until 2021, and even then, the Nvidia graphics cards may be available in very limited quantities.
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 and RTX 3050 Ti do not have official release dates.
