Capcom Targeted in Cyber Attack | Game Rant

It was recently revealed by Capcom that the company became a victim of a cyber attack from a currently unknown third party. This attack occurred during early in the day on November 2nd with Capcom putting out a statement on the incident on November 5th on Capcom’s website.

By looking at the original statement, Capcom revealed that the attack influenced internal file servers for the company as well as email servers. Because of this, the company has temporarily suspended the operations of the company’s internal network.

Players and purchasers of Capcom’s various games however do not need to worry about this attack. According to the statement, the attack had no connections to any of the games’ online accessibility or any of Capcom’s affiliated websites for its games. Customer information is also confirmed to not have leaked during the attack.

While Capcom has confirmed that the attack has come from a third party source, the statement does not clarify what the third party is or if Capcom knows the identity. It is however confirmed that this breach in security will not affect the online aspects of Capcom’s various games.

It is currently unknown what exactly was viewed during this cyber attack. With it being big enough for Capcom needing to put out an official statement, it could be possible for there to be important projects that had valuable information viewed.

Due to this incident, it is very possible for there to be large scale Capcom leaks involving Capcom’s current projects. This could include the upcoming Resident Evil 8: Village as well as other games that have not been officially announced to the public yet. However, no such leak has occurred yet, meaning that the attack possibly could have been stopped before anything of value was copied or viewed.

At this time, Capcom is seeking legal action and working with the police to arrest those responsible for the attack. The statement further says that any updates on the matter will be released in future statements on Capcom’s website.

Cyber attacks and hacking incidents are definitely not unheard of in the game development scene, especially with famous companies. While this incident is concerning, it is very fortunate that customer information such as credit card numbers, names, and addresses weren’t leaked or accessed in the process. It is very likely that Capcom will be increasing its internal security measures for the future.
