Control Ultimate Edition Delayed for PS5, Xbox Series X Until 2021

Released earlier this year, Control: Ultimate Edition is a compact bundle of all of the content Remedy Entertainment has released for Control so far. Alongside its base campaign, it also includes The Foundation and AWE expansions, as well as a full next-generation upgrade for the game coming to both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.

While the bundle is out now on modern consoles, it was slated to make its next-gen debut this year. However, it seems Remedy Entertainment needs more time to ensure the enhanced versions of Control: Ultimate Edition are the most definitive yet. Tweeting out a short statement, the studio revealed that the game’s Ultimate Edition will arrive on next-generation systems during 2021.

“We want the final quality of the game to be awesome, and so we need a bit more time to work on it,” Remedy claims in its tweet, confirming that the next-generation ports need a little longer in the oven before they’re ready to go. Although no official date is confirmed, it seems players won’t be waiting too long to get their hands on the enhanced version of Jesse Faden’s award-winning adventure.

Of course, the upgraded bundle’s release hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing for Remedy. Control: Ultimate Edition was met with a lot of backlash when it was announced last August due to 505 Games’ controversial decision to make the game’s next-generation upgrade a feature of the bundle. As a result, players who had purchased the original title and all its corresponding DLC would have to buy Control: Ultimate Edition for full price just to gain access to the game’s enhanced version on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. With a number of huge titles offering next-generation upgrades for free, 505 Games was accused of cheating passionate fans out of the enhanced version.

Of course, Control itself was far from as controversial as its new Ultimate Edition. The game was a surprise hit for Remedy back when it launched last year, bagging a win at the Game Awards for Best Art Direction and a nomination for Game of The Year. It went on to be one of the year’s most must-play experiences, with critics and players both agreeing that it was among the studio’s strongest titles to date.

The title went on to spawn two DLCs, with The Foundation seeing protagonist Jesse Faden investigate a new, ancient area of the game’s hub world and AWE seeing her team up with Alan Wake. The latter tied together several of Remedy Entertainment’s most popular video game universes, with recent rumors indicating the studio’s next game will follow in its footsteps.

Control: Ultimate Edition is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One, with its PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X ports slated to arrive in 2021.
