PS5 Currently Missing Major PS4 UI Feature | Game Rant

PlayStation fans who were hoping to customize their PlayStation 5‘s UI experience with a variety of themes and wallpapers will be disappointed to find out that the console will not support such a feature when it comes out next week.

Now that websites, publications, and media outlets are slowly publishing their reviews for the PlayStation 5, they are posting their impressions, analysis, and breakdowns, while talking about the PlayStation 5 itself and what it manages to accomplish as a console. Going off from that, one feature that the PS5 is missing from the PS4 is that the PS5 does not support any type of themes, be they dynamic or static. The PS4 allows users to download wallpapers and customize their UI menu with their favorite video game backgrounds (or any other non video game related backgrounds for that matter). This allows for a more personal touch and makes the whole UI experience feel a bit more special.

One possible reason to not have the PS5 support themes may be because of how game and app icons will function when players interact with them. Back when Sony shared the first look at the PS5 UI, a big piece of art was displayed for a specific game while having a soundtrack from that game play in the background. As such, with a game’s image dominating the PS5’s background, it can be hard to pay attention to any custom themes or wallpapers, essentially making them somewhat pointless and obsolete.

Despite not supporting any types of customizable themes and wallpapers at launch, there is still a glimmer of hope for the PS5. Back when the PS4 came out in November of 2013, it too did not support any custom themes, and all users had to deal with the same blue background while not being able to do anything about it. It wasn’t until October of 2014 when the PS4 received custom themes support as part of the version 2.00 update. As far as what it means for the PS5, there is a possibility that the next-generation console might also receive support for custom themes in the future – although it may take a while.

The PS5 still has a number of interesting and helpful features, however. For example, one feature that many are looking forward to deals with haptic feedback and how players can customize it for themselves when playing games. Those who plan on getting a PS5 on launch day will certainly want to give everything a try and customize their experience in order to suit their gaming needs one way or another. However, those trying to get a PS5 for theme customization may end up waiting some time before the feature becomes available (and if it becomes available).

The PlayStation 5 comes out on November 12, 2020.
