Thanks to Capcom‘s Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, fans knew exactly what happened before the devastating Raccoon City Destruction Incident. As it turned out, Resident Evil‘s signature zombie formula had graduated from infecting a mansion into infecting an entire city. Unfortunately, these games forever changed the lives of protagonists Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, and Leon Kennedy.
Interestingly, spinoff games reveal there’s more than meets the eye in Raccoon City’s destruction. In fact, some key events happened in between the short hours of Resident Evil 2 and 3. Moreover, it seems these events may have affected Raccoon City’s fate more than fans realized.
10 The 4th Survivor
Players of Resident Evil know that multiple characters survived the Raccoon City incident. However, as of 1998, RE2 players know of only three: Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield, and Sherry Birkin. As such, it may come off as a surprise to discover that HUNK, the masked Umbrella Corporation operative, actually survived the incident.
Fans of RE2 can play a minigame called The 4th Survivor that highlights HUNK’s escape from the city after William Birkin’s assault on his unit. Now awake in the sewers as his unit’s only survivor, players need to guide HUNK as he finds a way to a helicopter out of the city. Ideally, HUNK’s survival would come off as an ordinary moment. However, HUNK’s reputation for his combat skills become highlighted in the minigame, as he had a severely limited arsenal of weapons to use.
9 Outbreak From The Bar
Hardcore Resident Evil fans can play games such as 2003’s Resident Evil Outbreak to add other pieces to the Resident Evil timeline thanks to its various scenarios. Interestingly, its first scenario “Outbreak” actually details some of the earliest moments of the Raccoon City T-Virus Outbreak.
In this scenario, eight people find themselves at Jack’s Bar during the height of reported violent incidents within the city. Unfortunately, their supposed quiet night came to a halt when a man bursts in and suddenly bites one of the patrons in the neck. Two police officers with them eventually order civilians, including the survivors, to evacuate the immediate area.
Interestingly, this scenario happens right after William Birkin’s assault of HUNK’s unit. It appears Birkin consumed G-Virus samples to further his mutation. Unfortunately, spilled samples infected nearby rats, which in turn spread infection in the city’s water supply.
8 Hive Before The Hunt
Players of RE3 would remember Raccoon City General Hospital. In the game, Umbrella agents Sgt. Nikolai Zinoviev and Tyrell Patrick received orders to destroy the hospital, as it held files pertaining to Umbrella research. Thankfully, Carlos Oliviera got to the hospital and retrieved a T-Virus vaccine before the hospital got destroyed. Likewise, this same vaccine helped treat Jill Valentine’s T-Virus infection.
When Carlos infiltrated the Hospital, he had to clear a wave of Hunter βs in the area. Bestiary experts know the Hunter βs become the superior Hunter in the future games’ roster of horrifying monsters. Interestingly, Resident Evil Outbreak showed that leech creatures, controlled by a Leech Man, littered the Hospital a few days prior. In fact, it’s only after survivors finished off the Leech Man and its Queen that Hunter βs got access to the Hospital.
7 Death’s Door
Despite making her allegiances unclear, Ada Wong aids Leon in his journey to get out of Raccoon City. Unfortunately, a fateful encounter would have Ada sustain fatal injuries and fall off a bridge. Believing Ada to be dead, Leon trudges onward.
However, it seems the Raccoon City Destruction Incident had a fifth survivor — Ada Wong herself. In The Umbrella Chronicles, Ada serves as the player character of the “Death’s Door” scenario. In it, it’s revealed that Ada was able to make contact with the Agency, her real employers. Players of the game will have to guide Ada as she escapes Raccoon City with the G-Virus sample. Moreover, this game demonstrates Ada’s sheer badassery, thanks to how she used her Hookshot to escape the city on some cargo carried by helicopter.
6 Other Mutations Occurred
Thanks to RE2 and RE3, fans got acquainted with more terrifying opponents in the franchise. Aside from staple zombies, the two games introduced foes such as the various variations of Mr. X, Nemesis, and William Birkin. However, it seems more zombies have mutated into horrifying forms across the week of the Outbreak.
For instance, Resident Evil Outbreak featured the Suspender, a seemingly “middle” phase between a zombie and a Licker. Meanwhile, it also had the Leech Man, a leech-empowered zombie that exerts control over Leeches. It’s interesting to note how powerful creatures may have sprung from the Raccoon City outbreak, only to be destroyed by the missile of the Destruction Incident.
5 More Survivors Than Realized
Players of RE2 and RE3 know that the Raccoon City Destruction Incident served as a last resort against the rather-unstoppable outbreak in the eponymous location. And in the aftermath of the government’s secret missile launch, it’s believed most citizens of the city have perished. Interestingly, aside from the main series protagonists, more side characters appear to possess the same resilience and survivability as the series heroes.
In fact, in Resident Evil Outbreak and Outbreak File #2, multiple survivors have found their way outside the city before its destruction. For instance, the first Outbreak game highlighted how eight other survivors made it out of the city and now live more peaceful lives.
4 Fated Encounters
Interestingly, despite the diverging paths of Outbreak‘s survivors from the main series cast, some of them did have fated encounters with each other. Perhaps most notable of these would be Marvin Branagh, a police officer who decided to fend off zombies in the Raccoon Police Station to buy time for the Outbreak survivors’ escape. Unfortunately, this resulted in his infection.
However, eagle-eyed players can pinpoint fated encounters between Marvin and other protagonists. Others speculate it’s Brad Vickers who infected Marvin prior to RE3. Moreover, aside from his encounters with Leon and Claire in RE2, it seems Jill may have encountered Marvin but saw him too injured to even help.
3 Outbreaks Outside The City
Survivors who escape Raccoon City prior to its destruction didn’t immediately find shelter. It seems smaller outbreaks have occurred around the city’s outskirts, much in the same vein of RE1‘s Spencer Mansion Incident. However, instead of a mansion, one particular incident happened in an abandoned hospital in the nearby Arklay Mountains.
In Resident Evil Outbreak, the “Flashback” scenario had Alyssa Ashcroft and two other survivors escape an abandoned hospital from plant-like threats. Perhaps more interesting is the presence of “Dorothy,” a malicious plant that turned out to be a mutated version of the wife of one of the people living nearby.
2 Somebody Made A Cure
Fans who played the two main titles would remember that the only instance of a T-Virus vaccine came when Carlos synthesized one for Jill’s infection in RE3: Nemesis. However, the Remake expands this concept as something that came from the research of Dr. Nathaniel Bard. Unfortunately, Nikolai destroyed what’s left of the vaccine in his last confrontation with Jill and Carlos.
However, not all hope was lost. In fact, it seems someone actually successfully synthesized another vaccine. In Resident Evil Outbreak, physicians Dr. Peter Jenkins and Dr. Greg Mueller developed a vaccine called Daylight to combat the T-Virus. In turn, the Daylight vaccine became the go-to treatment whenever a T-Virus outbreak happens.
1 The Start Of Umbrella’s Fall
Players following Resident Evil‘s story know that Umbrella Corporation’s fall begins shortly after the Raccoon City Destruction Incident. However, its roots began much earlier when more employees, both current and former, had shown distress over the company’s approach to their projects. One such former employee, Yoko Suzuki, once had her memories wiped of her time under the company. However, she slowly regained her memories throughout Resident Evil Outbreak.
In the scenario “Below Freezing Point,” Yoko leads fellow survivors George Hamilton and Alyssa Ashcroft to Birkin’s underground facility. They hope to use the escape tunnel to finally escape Raccoon City, something they successfully accomplish. In her epilogue, Yoko becomes instrumental in Raccoon City’s fall thanks to her testimonies in court.
