PUBG Mobile Could Return to India Following Microsoft Deal

The ongoing saga of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds mobile game being removed from Indian marketplaces is seemingly entering a new chapter. PUBG Mobile was banned in India earlier this September over cybersecurity issues related to the game’s publisher, Tencent. Now, PUBG Mobile may be returning to the country following a new partnership with Microsoft, in which PUBG Mobile‘s data will be hosted on Microsoft’s Azure servers.

The news comes from PUBG Mobile‘s parent company, the South Korean Krafton, Inc. Krafton announced plans to move games including PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on PC and consoles, as well as PUBG Mobile, onto Microsoft’s Azure services. It has been further reported by TechCrunch via sources within developer PUBG Corporation that due to this decision, PUBG Mobile may once again be available in India. This has yet to be officially confirmed, however.

PUBG Mobile already separated from its previous publisher, Tencent, just a week after the ban. However, the ban wasn’t lifted despite the distance from the Chinese publisher, and no new publisher has since been announced – though it’s possible that the game will be self-published. The heart of the issue appears to be the security of user data, which India will reportedly trust under Microsoft’s oversight.

For the time being, PUBG Mobile remains banned in India and there’s no word that government officials are reconsidering that position. It wasn’t just PUBG Mobile that was banned, but a range of games. Nevertheless, for many fans of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in India, there’s at least some hope PUBG Mobile will return eventually.

PUBG Mobile is currently available on iOS and Android devices.
