Respawn Discusses Potential Apex Legends Character Reworks

Season 7 for Apex Legends kicked off three days ago and players are discovering all the changes the new season is bringing. Along with a new map, the new legend Horizon, and the introduction of vehicles, changes were made to the Battle Pass and legends, which prompted some questions from fans.

Respawn Entertainment faced backlash for changes made to the Season 7 Battle Pass, which featured harder challenges, a star system to simplify the Battle Pass, and longer completion time. Respawn developers responded to the backlash with some immediate changes and transparency regarding the thinking behind the Battle Pass. During the developers’ response on Reddit, one user asked if any characters would be receiving reworks. Respawn Entertainment Game Designer Daniel Klein responded with a detailed breakdown of how Apex Legends approaches character changes.

Klein first shared what the process of a rework actually is and how it is a last resort for developers. Klein explains that the reason for avoiding reworks is that they can invalidate player learning. Any rework changes the gameplay and strategy for any character drastically, and any hard work done to learn abilities is taken away.

Klein shared, “A remake, in my view, is anything that meaningfully changes the play pattern of a character. For instance, previously Mirage could only send Decoys in a straight line…After the rework, he gained the ability to have decoys mirror his actions: suddenly Mirage players have to do very different actions from what they had to do before.”

Another character that has been given a rework is the support medic Lifeline. Klein explains that Lifeline’s rework was purely due to her abilities not meshing well with the intended gameplay of a support character. Lifeline is intended to be an effective medic, however Gibraltar was able to outshine her with his ability  to revive allies quickly in his dome shield. While players may feel that more legends deserve reworks, Klein explains that deciding which characters to tweak and adjust is a long process.

Klein shares that major reworks would most likely be included in major patches, which usually occur at the start of a season. Since Season 7 has already started with no reworks to any legends, a rework would occur in Season 8 based on the gameplay observed in Season 7. Although there have been no reworks, eight of the legends received tweaks at the beginning of Season 7.

Bangalore, Loba, Mirage, Octane, Rampart, and Wattson all received small buffs to their abilities, while Caustic and Pathfinder received nerfs . During Season 6, Klein discussed how a major Loba buff would be problematic despite the fact that she fell from the meta very quickly. It seems Klein and his team were able to increase her looting power for Black Market Boutique without making the legend overpowered, and now Loba can now grab unlimited ammo from her Ultimate.

Apex Legends is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One with a Nintendo Switch version in development.
