Nintendo’s all-star brawler Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is home to characters from all across the gaming universe with Nintendo staples like Mario, Link, and Samus, as well as third party icons like Cloud, Banjo and Kazooie, and Minecraft‘s Steve. While indie characters have had some representation as well, such as Shovel Knight appearing as an Assist Trophy or Undertale‘s Sans getting a Mii costume, there are not any fighters who solely belong to an indie developer.
However, thanks to the ingenuity of modders, it is not impossible to see some of indie gaming’s favorite characters make their way to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in some form. Endersheep12345, a modder known for their work on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, has recently released a mod that introduces the Crewmate from the incredibly popular game, Among Us. For those out of the loop, Among Us is a social deduction, hidden role game where players control crew members on a spaceship where one or more of their fellow players are secretly Imposters that are tasked with sabotaging, murdering, and lying their way to victory while the real Crewmate’s try to figure out who is telling the truth and who is lying.
A video released by YouTuber 64iOS showcases the Crewmates in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and how they work. While the mod simply replaces Pac-Man with a Crewmate skin, it is definitely interesting to see the chubby, minimalist Crewmate hopping around and fighting with gaming giants. 64iOS also uses another mod by PK_ to replace Pac-Man‘s iconic Ghosts’ sprites with the in-game Crewmate sprites. While Pac-Man’s moveset doesn’t quite lend itself to the Crewmate, it is the best anyone can likely hope for in terms of Among Us representation in Super Smash Bros., for the time being at least.
Despite its popularity, Among Us is not very likely to see any hard representation in Super Smash Bros. The rest of Fighter Pack 2 has already been chosen by Nintendo and that was well before Among Us boosted into popularity. And to further the point, there is not much room for the Crewmate to have a unique and stylized moveset. Sure, there are some deadly moves to be seen when an Imposter kills an unsuspecting Crewmate, but that only goes so far.
Although, it is not out of the question to see Among Us make an appearance in popular indie fighters like Brawlhalla or Rivals of Aether, which have both release indie fighters to their roster. Only time will tell whether or not Among Us will appear in other games.
Despite all of that, the mod itself is an impressive piece of work that deserves to be commended on its own. Watching passionate modders create fun spins on gaming favorites, like Skyward Sword dungeons in Breath of the Wild, is an objectively good thing.
