Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have begun production on the third Spider-Man film in the MCU. Now, Tom Holland has taken to his official Instagram account to share the first official photo of him in costume for his latest outing as the wall-crawler.
As with a lot of Hollywood projects in 2020, cameras on Marvel Studios and Sony’s third Spider-Man film were originally supposed to start rolling in July before the COVID-19 pandemic forced production to be delayed. Consequently, Sony had to push back the film’s release date from July 2021 to November and then again to December of the same year.
With filming on the next Spider-Man film postponed until October, Holland instead spent the summer working on Sony’s feature film adaptation of the Uncharted video games, in which he will portray Nathan Drake. Almost immediately after wrapping on Uncharted, Holland arrived in Atlanta, Georgia, to begin filming his third Spider-Man film, announcing the news on social media but refusing to divulge spoilers (for a change).
In the first behind-the-scenes photo from Marvel’s third Spider-Man film, Holland is shown on a blue screen set in the same costume he wore for most of Far From Home, although this time he is also sporting a white N95 mask to demonstrate the level of precaution being taken amid the pandemic. In the caption Holland wrote, “wear a mask, I’m wearing two…”
The next Spider-Man film will find the wall-crawler crossing paths with Jamie Foxx’s Electro, who returns from the abandoned Amazing Spider-Man film series. The villain’s inclusion in the film, despite him existing in a separate and seemingly defunct movie universe, may be explained by the involvement of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, a character whose own sequel centers on the concept of the multiverse. Cumberbatch will begin filming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness upon completing his work on Spider-Man 3.
Of course, the possibility of seeing the multiverse play a role in the next Spider-Man film had led to speculation about who else could make unexpected appearances. At the top of mind for most fans are former Spider-Man stars Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, though Sony has dismissed reports of them potentially reprising their roles as mere rumors.
Fans may have a better sense of what Marvel Studios has planned for the multiverse once WandaVision premieres on Disney+. In addition to following Scarlet Witch as she seemingly creates an alternate reality, the series is said to lead directly into the previously mentioned Doctor Strange sequel.
Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man 3 is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 17th, 2021.
