5 Souls-Likes That Were Too Hard (& 5 That Were Too Easy)

Even a Souls-like video game can be beaten. There is a pathway to conquering games like Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. By playing easier Souls-likes, players can overcome the claustrophobia associated with battling bosses in tight spaces.

Souls-like games are part of a subgenre that has become a prominent part of the gaming industry. Developers like FromSoftware and Team Ninja have made their mark on the subgenre with new meanings for ragequitting. Yes, a Souls-like game can be easy. Don’t let the “Souls-like” label deter you from playing these games.

10 Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (Too Easy)

The gaming population was thrown for a loop when people heard that developer Respawn Entertainment was entering the Souls-like biz. The company behind Titanfall and Apex Legends had big expectations to live up to.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order proved relevance as a Souls-like because of its unforgiving boss fights. However, the game has multiple difficulty levels, and the hardest is far from being the pinnacle of difficulty. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order would’ve benefited from a higher difficulty level.

9 Remnant: From The Ashes (Too Hard)

Remnant: From the Ashes can be a rewarding game, but the punishing difficulty might deter some players. The game’s lowest setting is the Normal difficulty, which “provides a good challenge for most players.” The highest difficulty, Apocalypse, is much too difficult for the average player. Remnant: From the Ashes might have benefited from an Easy difficulty setting. In an almost uniform fashion, the game’s bosses are increasingly difficult, with the final boss Dreamer/Nightmare being the hardest.

8 Ashen (Too Easy)

Unlike the Dark Souls franchise, Ashen offers less of a challenge to players. Completing quests, which are called “Journeys,” are the form of progression in Ashen. One downside to the Journeys is that they are far too linear. Dark Souls overarching goals are far less linear, adding to the game’s difficulty. In Ashen, bosses are easy to manipulate, and enemies can be passed with ease. The game doesn’t do a good job of offering a challenge.

7 Hollow Knight (Too Hard)

The hand-drawn 2D Metroidvania Hollow Knight takes after the Dark Souls franchise in more ways than one. The most obvious comparison is the grueling boss fights, yet it could be said that Hollow Knight is more difficult than Dark Souls. It has a steep learning curve, with a significant trial and error component. If you can manage to progress through this arduous journey, Hollow Knight is an enjoyable game.

6 Dark Souls II (Too Easy)

There are areas of Dark Souls II that caused trouble for players, such as the Fume Knight, Ancient Dragon, and the Smelter Demon. However, the difficulty of Dark Souls II is easy in comparison to other Souls-like games. The most frustrating part of Dark Souls II is not the enemy and boss difficulty but instead the game’s backtracking and confusing map. It’s difficult in all the wrong places; Dark Souls might even be too easy.

5 Nioh (Too Hard)

In recent years, Team Ninja has ignored Ninja Gaiden, their most prominent franchise, to focus on Nioh. Although there are some parallels between Ninja Gaiden and Nioh, it’s much more accurate to classify Nioh as Souls-like.

If you manage to beat Nioh, consider yourself a real gamer. This headache of a game has some of the most grueling boss fights in Souls-like history. Shima Sakon is probably the most difficult because of his enormous damage and for being challenging to stagger.

4 Nioh 2 (Too Easy)

The sequel to Nioh answered back with three-player cooperative play and a host of new features that enhance gameplay. Nioh 2 will go down as one of the great Souls-likes, despite being a game that is undeniably easier than its predecessor. The game lets you summon blue graves and co-op partners with ease. Moreover, Nioh 2’s bosses have Ki (stamina) that drains easier. Leveling is straightforward, making this an easy Souls-like—maybe even too easy.

3 Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition (Too Hard)

Although Demon’s Souls came before Dark Souls, the latter put the subgenre on our radars. Dark Souls has more enemy variation, polished combat, and a variety of other praiseworthy gameplay elements. The map design of Dark Souls is intricate and confusing rather than linear and straightforward.

The Ornstein & Smough boss fight is considered one of the most difficult in video games’ history. At every turn, the game is punishing you for mistakes. Dark Souls is way too hard for the average gamer.

2 Dark Souls III (Too Easy)

The final game in the Dark Souls trilogy had tremendous potential, but it ultimately fell short of expectations because of its easy difficulty, among other reasons. The game kicks off with an epic clash against Iudex Gundyr, a boss with silver cast-iron armor, in the Cemetery of Ash. From there, things go downhill and sideways as the game gets too relaxed. There are outliers like the Nameless King and Pontiff Sulyvahn, but it’s hard to deny the disparity in difficulty between Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition and Dark Souls III.

1 Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (Too Hard)

From Software’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice might be the quintessential Souls-like game because of its painstaking difficulty that rewards players. FromSoftware invented the Souls-like subgenre, but they likely never expected a game outside the main series to be their biggest accomplishment. It won the 2019 Game of the Year award at The Game Awards 2019. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’s bosses like Isshin Ashina and Genichiro might be too difficult for the novice gamer, but it works on so many levels.
