Every Overwatch 2 Rumor About Blizzard’s New Game | Game Rant

Overwatch 2, the upcoming sequel to Blizzard’s popular first-person team-based shooter, was announced at BlizzCon last year. Since then, the fan-base has been filled with rumors and speculation on everything from a concrete release date to some of the big changes coming to the engine Blizzard used for the previous game.

Overwatch 2 is a hotly anticipated title, and with so many rumors flying around, many fans are stuck simply trying to wrap their heads around all the new information supposedly coming to light. Here’s every major rumor about Overwatch 2 that the fans have been following so far.

There are already some details about Overwatch 2 which have been confirmed. The game will be taking advantage of the TED engine to create larger maps, with maps confirmed so far in Toronto, Rio de Janeiro, Gothenburg, and Monte Carlo. New heroes like Sojourn will be joining the fray, and a cinematic trailer for Overwatch 2 has been released. There remain many questions, however.

2020 began with rumors all the way back in January that Overwatch 2 would release this year. This was originally based on a tweet posted by PlayStation Brazil on January 6 which said “2020 will be the year Overwatch 2 comes to PS4.”  The tweet was quickly taken down, but as 2020 comes to a close, it’s a good reminder to take any of these rumors with a pinch of salt. Of course, it is possible that Overwatch 2 was originally scheduled for a 2020 release before delays to the development process caused by COVID-19.

The director of the game, Jeff Kaplan, pointed to BlizzConline 2021, as the next time fans can expect major information revealed. While this might seem like a way off, BlizzCon actually takes place relatively early in the year, with BlizzConline 2021 set for February 19 and 20 of next year.

However, Kaplan also said that Overwatch 2 did not currently have a set release window. It’s possible that Blizzard has had to adopt a more flexible development process for the game to allow for employees working from home over the past year, but the hinted BlizzConline 2021 updates could mean the game is still on track and that information is simply being withheld until the game is closer to release.

Twitch streamer Metro, who had previously accurately leaked the announcement of Overwatch 2 and of Ashe as a new hero for the first game, made another “prediction” which has big implications for Overwatch 2:

Many fans will be excited by the suggestion of a release around February 2021, though the fact that Kaplan has told fans not to expect any news until early 2021 could make that schedule appear a little tight. It’s also possible that Overwatch 2‘s beta will simply become accessible around that time, allowing players to get ahold of an unfinished version of the game before release.

Overwatch 2 will include at least four new playable heroes, co-op, and new maps and game modes. Since the game is being developed on an upgraded version of the engine used for the first game, it is possible that Overwatch 2 will release sooner rather than later thanks to having a shorter development schedule that may take some fans by surprise.

The good news for players hungry for more information, is that BlizzConline will be free to watch, unlike previous iterations of the conference where even the online version was behind a pretty steep pay-wall. The fact that BlizzCon is going free could hint that a big announcement is coming, but as will all the rumors so far nothing is set in stone.

Overwatch 2 is in development for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
