Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Falls Short of 4K 60 FPS in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Ubisoft’s next entry in the long-running Assassin’s Creed series, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla doesn’t really hit the 60 FPS mark on NVIDIA’s most powerful graphics card in the market currently: GeForce RTX3090. A video posted by GameGPU featuring the game’s in-built benchmark-setting seems to confirm that.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is Ubisoft’s 12th main instalment in this immensely popular franchise. The game builds upon the foundation laid by 2018’s Assassin’s Creed Origins and 2019’s Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, both of which leaned heavily towards the action RPG genre. Developed by the Origins team, Valhalla seems to take it a step further with new features such as Settlement Building, that has an uncanny resemblance to the Skyhold in 2014’s Dragon Age Inquisition.

While being a cross-generational title, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on GeForce RTX 3090 runs mostly at 56 FPS,  4K ultra settings, which may not seem like an issue to some. What’s concerning is the occasional drop-ins to a jarring 40 FPS in densely populated areas. Interestingly, there’s no word on how well the game runs at AMD’s most powerful card: 6900 XT, at 4K Ultra setting.

It’s not just the PC version of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla that’s struggling. On the next-gen consoles, the game runs at an upscaled 4K resolution. While the game is confirmed to be running at 60 FPS on both Xbox Series X and PS5, it will be interesting to see how steady that turns out to be.

With the on-going pandemic, it isn’t surprising to see a lot of games struggle with a few issues here and there. With Cyberpunk 2077 being delayed for the third time this year, performance issues such as the ones in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla shouldn’t be much of a deal-breaker, especially considering the fact that Ubisoft has three big, AAA games to focus on this holiday season with Watch Dogs Legion’s PC and current-gen variants already out in the wild. Moreover, these performance issues can always be solved with a day one patch.

Although it is inevitably a matter of discussion as to why these next-gen systems and GPU’s are not able to outshine these cross-generation games, which as of now are not even utilizing these systems’ full potential. BluePoint Games’ upcoming remake of 2009’s Demon’s Souls also suffers from a similar issue. Even though it looks magnificent with its grim, claustrophobic corridors nothing but eye candy, Demon’s Souls lack ray tracing, that is supposedly one of the biggest next-gen features.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla launches November 10, for PC, PS4, Stadia, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S while the PS5 version launches two days later on November 12.
