Comic Variant Postponement May Signal Another Wonder Woman 1984 Delay

DC Comics has informed retailers that its Wonder Woman 1984 variant covers are being postponed until 2021. The variants had been scheduled to coincide with the Christmas day release of Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman sequel.g

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Warner Bros. had already rescheduled the theatrical release of Wonder Woman 1984 twice before settling on a June 2020 date. However, the lockdown measures that were taken to slow the spread of the virus meant movie theaters would have to close for an undetermined period of time, requiring the studio to once again postpone the Wonder Woman sequel’s release date. Initially, Warner Bros. hoped to release the film in August before postponing it until October, but a Christmas Day premiere was ultimately chosen as it became clear the pandemic would worsen in fall and theaters in certain areas began closing their doors again.

DC Comics had planned to release nine variant covers for certain titles, including Batman #104 and The Flash #767, throughout December leading up to the theatrical debut of Wonder Woman 1984. However, DC’s statement to retailers notes that the variants are now being delayed until 2021 to coincide with the 80th anniversary of Wonder Woman. The DC heroine made her first appearance on October 21, 1941, in the pages of Sensation Comics #8. The variants have already been postponed multiple times years year to line-up with the changing release dates of Wonder Woman 1984, though Warner Bros. has not announced any plans to further delay the film at this time.

Warner Bros. chair-CEO Anne Sarnoff recently reaffirmed the studio’s commitment to releasing Wonder Woman 1984 on Christmas but noted a final decision will depend on how the United States plans to reopen theaters. While Warner Bros. had decided to release Christopher Nolan’s Tenet internationally before premiering the film in the U.S., the domestic gross of Wonder Woman 1984 will be of greater importance to the studio. Whether or not there are any surges in reported COVID-19 cases will also factor into the studio’s decision regarding the film’s release date.

While fans may be hoping the studio will give up on a theatrical release and make Wonder Woman 1984 available on VOD instead, director Patty Jenkins has denied the idea is even being considered. The filmmaker hopes Wonder Woman 1984 will be able to draw moviegoers back to theaters and help the struggling industry, possibly even preventing its demise during the pandemic.

With roughly seven weeks left until Christmas, Warner Bros. will have to make a decision about Wonder Woman 1984‘s release soon. While most television ads can be rescheduled, companies that have partnered with the studio to promote the DC film, including LEGO and Doritos, will need to know if and when they begin rolling out their products.

Wonder Woman 1984 is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on December 25th, 2020.
