The FPS (Frames Per Second) that a game runs at determines how many frames of animation are in a single second of gameplay. Higher FPS means smoother animation and more visual information for the player to take advantage of. There are many games, especially competitive ones, where performing certain actions under a certain amount of frames can be a great skill that leaves the opposition with little time to react.
With more sophisticated technology than in the past, modern games can reach a higher FPS than ever before. To the joy of gamers everywhere, there are quite a few new titles that are going to be taking advantage of this boon on both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, although the latter has confirmed many more 120 FPS titles so far.
21 Xbox: CrossCode
This RPG will have smooth animation to match its smooth gameplay, to the delight of fans across the globe. While CrossCode is a relatively old game, as it was originally released in 2015, the refined art style lends itself greatly to the new specs of the next-generation consoles.
20 Xbox: ExoMecha
With a great deal of high-paced action and gunfights, everyone is glad this is one of the titles to get the 120 FPS treatment. Let the destruction begin. ExoMecha is set to launch in 2021 on Microsoft’s Xbox consoles, including the Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.
19 Xbox: Gears 5
This brutal shooter game will give franchise lovers the chance to decimate hideous foes with increased details that will make every battle incredible. Chainsawing enemies in half has never looked or felt so intense. A welcome addition to the franchise and one of the Xbox One’s better console exclusive, Gears 5 will maximize its potential with the Series X.
18 Xbox: Halo Infinite
The legendary Halo series returns with the sixth main installment. It is likely the Xbox exclusive that gamers are the most excited about. If Halo Infinite didn’t get 120 FPS, it would have been an outrage.
Grenade grunts and execute elites with greater precision than ever before thanks to Halo Infinite‘s 120 FPS. Because of this and more, many cannot wait to walk in Master Chief’s massive green boots once again.
17 Xbox: Halo: The Master Chief Collection
Master Chief fans will be able to enjoy all previous Halo games in glorious 120 FPS as well. This boost in performance will make playing the remastered versions of these older titles feel fresh. Just imagine how satisfying head-shotting a jackal through the gap in their shield will be now that players can line up their shots with maximum smoothness.
16 Xbox: Jydge
This top-down shooter with a plethora of visual effects will only become more satisfying with the FPS upgrade. Hooray for lighting effects and glowing objects! Jydge takes a page from Judge Dredd and was released in 2017, making it backward compatible with ninth-generation consoles.
15 Xbox: King Oddball
This unique game will allow players to throw rocks at helicopters, tanks, and much more with the smoothness of throwing rocks in real life. Please don’t try this at home. King Oddball is quite an old game, as it debuted early on in the previous generation’s lifespan.
14 Xbox: Metal: Hellsinger
As a combination of a First Person Shooter and a Rhythm game, this hybrid will give gamers the best chance to get the highest possible score with the added fluidity. Metal: Hellsinger is set to be released in 2021.
13 Xbox: Ori And The Will Of The Wisps
Artistic games tend to benefit greatly from improved framerates. Ori and the Will Of The Wisps, a stunning sequel to 2015’s Ori and the Blind Forest, offers silky-smooth animation, gripping gameplay, and gorgeous visuals.
Ori and the Will Of The Wisps is among the best games of the last few years, and it will play even better on the Xbox Series X.
12 Xbox: Orphan Of The Machine
This underwater adventure apparently blends aspects of very different games, particularly Ecco The Dolphin and the Metroid series. Water physics have been known to cause lag in previous generation consoles, so seeing how Orphan Of The Machine and similar games perform will likely be a great test for the new hardware.
11 Xbox: Rogue Company
This free-to-play tactical shooter is one of the few free games to get the 120 FPS boost. Fans of such games will enjoy smooth fights in any situation now, while those players looking to play a third-person shooter but do not want to revisit Gears 5 should consider giving Rogue Company a spin.
10 Xbox: Second Extinction
Doing battle with dinosaurs is always fun. Now it can be done with maximum precision and reaction time thanks to being in 120 FPS. Fans of similar prehistoric-predator battling games, like the Turok franchise, will likely have lots of fun with Second Extinction.
9 Xbox: Star Wars: Squadrons
Cinematic games that take place in outer space are an ideal target for the additional frames per second.
With Star Wars: Squadrons confirmed to run at 120 FPS on Microsoft’s ninth-generation consoles, each beam, laser, and missile’s path will be tracked with ease to the joy of fighter pilots all over the universe.
8 Xbox: The Falconeer
Many will love taking in the epic sights from high above while controlling the majestic falcon in The Falconeer. A gorgeous world awaits to be explored now with an increased FPS that will make the gameplay all that more fluid.
7 Xbox: The Touryst
This fun excursion will only get better thanks to more fluid animation. The Touryst was originally released in 2019 on the Nintendo Switch before making its way to Microsoft’s Xbox One and Windows in 2020.
While not the most hyped-up title in the Xbox Series X’s line-up, The Touryst presents players with a unique and fun experience.
6 Both: WRC 9
Also available on previous generation consoles, WRC 9 will support 120 FPS on the Ps5 and the Xbox Series X. With videos and photos showing off how gorgeous the game looks so far, one can expect a rivetting racing experience. The game needs to be set to performance mode to unlock 120 FPS.
5 Both: Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition
Fans of the Devil May Cry franchise should prepare to pull their devil triggers at maximum velocity with the added speed and reaction time gained from the FPS boost. Devil May Cry 5 is already one of the best entries in the franchise, and the improved FPS will only further cement its legacy.
4 Both: Dirt 5
The racing genre and its games stand to hugely benefit from more frames packed into a single second. Drift, drag, and drive with maximum smoothness upon the rugged roads of the newest Dirt game.
3 Both: Rainbow Six Siege
Another fast-paced shooter, the immensely fun multiplayer gameplay of Rainbow Six Siege will now give both sides a more fluid experience. When every split-second matters, the added reaction time will make this a whole new game for both new and veteran players. Rainbow Six Siege has become one of the best multiplayer titles on the market, and that looks set to extend into the next few years.
2 Both: Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom
This charming platformer will grant players the ability to travel and do battle with animation as smooth as what one might find in television shows or movies. Fans of anime will enjoy Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom‘s art style, while those looking for a platformer should find quite a lot to enjoy in this 2018 title.
1 Both: Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
First-person shooters have been waiting for the day when they might finally be able to run at 120 FPS. The much-loved Call of Duty series is known for its fast-paced gun-totting gameplay and ability to keep one’s pulse racing at maximum speeds. Black Ops Cold War should be no different.
